SUMMARY

Reporting to GAF’s Head of Residential Growth & Innovation, the Sr. Director and General Manager of GAF Material Solutions is an executive management role responsible for taking the business concept in development, bringing it to market and building out the team. As such, s/he will provide the strategic and operational oversight for the emerging business line and will measure and monitor the “growth ecosystem” from incubation through go-to-market, as well as advancing the change agenda.

THE PRODUCT LINE

The “Material Solutions” business unit produces non-asphaltic residential roofing products (metal shingles, recycled shingles, synthetic tiles, etc.) The products are in various stages of maturity. All products address at least one of the following fundamental industry trends: installed cost, building performance, sustainable materials cycle, evolving supply chain.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Entrepreneurship, Business Management, & Business Growth

  • Work with senior executive partners to set and refine the vision for the Material Solutions business line and define the overall strategy from launch to scale, including long-term goals

  • Drive day-to-day operations and align resources to achieve key business priorities

  • Own the operational budget and manage burn rate while growing the business ahead of market disruptions

Business Development & Commercialization

  • Develop analyses and materials to support efforts to evangelize key principles and strategic themes to guide strategic initiatives, including organic/inorganic growth, annual investment plans, new business generation, etc.

  • Introduce products to new and existing GAF customers, communicating the unique value proposition of each product to various parties, often on a deeply technical level

  • Oversee partnerships with third parties, including channels, distributors, and key players, etc.

  • Determine demographic and geographic target markets for each product

  • Drive positive sales and margin results through operational effectiveness, product quality, and cost management throughout the entire supply chain and operations areas

  • Evangelize key principles and strategic themes to guide strategic initiatives, including organic/inorganic growth, annual investment plans, new business generation, etc.

  • Act as a counselor to the executive team on key decisions regarding inorganic transactions (e.g., M&A, JVs, etc.), new product launches, and key capabilities

Continuous Disruption & Innovation

  • Support the development of the business and operations model ahead of the market

  • Provide expert guidance to all functional areas, including operations, sales & product

  • Develop innovative operations and supply chain processes and tools for existing- and new products/service lines while leveraging existing GAF systems and processes where appropriate

Stakeholder Management

  • Regularly report updates to management regarding progress on strategic priorities, and drive collaboration where necessary to accelerate progress

  • Invest in strategic partnerships & relationships to drive growth

  • Support management’s external efforts as the spokesperson and champion for the Material Solutions business line

Leadership

  • Attract, retain & develop world-class talent, including making recruitment decisions of a cross-functional team

  • Cultivate a high-performing, agile, one-team culture that is driven by relentless innovation

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Position Expectations

  • The role requires an experienced “intrapreneurial” GM or divisional leader who is passionate about growing a new company or business line with a differentiated product offering. A hands-on player, coach and business operator who consistently delivers breakthrough business results, product strategies, customer partnerships and influences cross-functional teams with or without direct ownership.

  • Given the dynamic nature of the innovation work streams, s/he will have a broad understanding and experience spanning product innovation & strategy, pricing, financial analysis, business planning, cost management/reduction, cash flow management and business acquisition.

Required Qualifications

  • A successful track record and proven adeptness combining financial management, business development, sales, new product introduction, partnership development & management, innovation scouting, cross-functional project & program management, product development, solution design & integration, corporate R&D

  • P&L exposure at a business unit level or a product level

  • Experience in managing corporate stakeholders to keep regular updates on business performance and progress

  • Ability to develop, communicate, and persuade stakeholders even in the face of extreme skepticism, risk, and uncertainty

  • Experience leading initiatives throughout the innovation lifecycle: from insight, to conception, to business model design, to hypothesis testing, to piloting and scaling

  • Experience pursuing businesses and initiatives that have failed (yes, we see failure as an asset - IF you’ve been able to do so in a de-risked way and have learned as a result); and those that have been forced to undertake intense pivoting and iteration to ultimately become successful

  • Have had to hack your way into a situation, result, or outcome that otherwise would have been impossible to achieve
