Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Science Communications Intern in Woods Hole, Massachusetts

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institituion (WHOI) is looking for a Science Communications Intern to join the Applied Ocean Physics & Engineering Department. This is a tempoary, casual (8-10 hours a week), non-exempt position, and is eligible for casual benefits.

The Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) is a science-driven ocean observing network that delivers real-time data from more than 800 instruments to address critical science questions regarding the world’s ocean. OOI data are freely available online to anyone with an Internet connection.

OOI offers an opportunity to gain exposure and experience in all aspects of science communication from the backend of a website to the front end of social media serving as the public face of this complex ocean observing network. You will learn how to reach varied stakeholders that include research scientists, academic institutions, college classroom professors and students, ocean policy decisionmakers, and members of the public who care about the ocean to explore what we are learning from ocean data.

The program office is located at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in Woods Hole, MA and staffed by WHOI employees.

The internal working title for this position could be either Administrative Assistant I or Administrative Assistant II. The level of the position will be determined and commensurate with the selected candidate's level of education & experience.

Both levels:

  • Updating the website – posting articles, managing images/video galleries & updating publications

  • Crafting social media messages/posting

  • Updating stakeholders list

  • Other administrative duties as needed

Administrative Assistant I:

  • Performs other duties deemed necessary with supervision

Administrative Assistant II:

  • Performs all the functions listed above with additional level of independence

  • Ability to identify and resolve both immediate and long-term problems with slightly less supervision

Administrative Assistant I:

  • High school diploma is required

  • Working toward a bachelor's degree preferred in relevant course of study

  • Performs duties with guidance from the supervisor

Administrative Assistant II:

  • High school diploma is required

  • Working toward a bachelor's or master's degree in relevant course of study

  • At least two years of relevant work experience

Physical duties for this position include the ability to lift less than 25 lbs and carry up to 10 lbs. Near vision is required as well as being able to work around and with others; as well as working alone while being able to hear and talk. This position is mostly sedentary in nature, requires occasional standing, walking, use of hands for basic/fine grasping/manipulating.
