Position: Director of R&DBASIC PURPOSE:The Director of Research & Development will provide leadership in the development of new products, processes, and services for all our Client's strategic product lines. This role will develop and implement systems to harmonize the R&D activities across all of Client's global facilities.PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES - ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:(Other duties may be assigned.)

  • R&D Leadership

  • Structure and lead the global R&D organization in line with our Client's strategic plan.

  • Lead all aspects of R&D operations related to R&D project management and documentation.

  • Product Development

  • Analyzes complex business needs presented by the user community and/or clients and recommends technical solutions.

  • Takes high level product requirements and turns them into detailed functional specifications and provides the ultimate approval of any product and raw material specification.

  • Leads monthly initial design review meeting to qualify or disqualify proposed projects with business directors and cross-functional teams.

  • Work with global cross-functional teams to ensure that products are well defined and developed according to agreed specifications and schedules.

  • Plan and execute all formulation development activities for development projects ensuring the right level of resources and prioritization are provided.

  • Ensure that product level stage gate reviews are completed and drive development of program level stage gate deliverables.

  • New Product Development (NPD), including exploring both short term and long term solutions that create a sustainable pipeline of differentiated new products.

  • Leverages market knowledge, consumer & customer behavior, industry trends and advances in technology. Leads, develops and inspires a team to explore, test, learn and translate knowledge into tangible solutions.

  • Understands & embraces the "fit for purpose? mindset to product development and, when available and relevant, delivers uniqueness and differentiation through intellectual property (including trade secrets), testing protocol and/or supplier partnerships.

  • Directs research and product development efforts and ensures key milestones, project timelines and approved budgets are met.

  • Work with plant process engineers and operational personnel to establish trial plans and trial run reports according to a documented schedule that meets or exceeds customer expectations.

  • Establishes and aligns business case with cross-functional Directors and VP/GM to deliver revenue & margin targets.

  • Advanced Analytical Laboratory

  • Manage the team and supporting analytical hardware/assets and functions associated with this job area. Primarily focused on advanced analytical services provide to the enterprise in a high level quality and troubleshooting duties.

  • Managerial

  • Using technical expertise and management experience to coach, mentor, evaluate and guide staff in setting project priorities, dealing with and resolving technical challenges, meeting project goals and timelines, and for making technical and management decisions to keep projects on track.

  • Creates a collaborative, learning & accountable culture, working closely with internal and external customers/resources, and delivering speed, quality & value consistently.

  • Responsible for hiring, developing and providing ongoing, timely and actionable feedback to team.

  • M&A

  • Evaluation of technology fit with outside companies targeted for acquisition by our Client.

  • Participate in technology integration for our Client's future acquisitions.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS Science, Chemistry or related field. MS/ MBA preferred. PhD in similar fields and/or advanced chemistry is a plus.

  • 5 years' experience in chemical, polymer or composite material industry preferred.

  • 10 years' professional business experience leading both technical and non-technical teams

  • 5 years' experience directly managing professional managers and individual contributors.

  • Must have outstanding leadership skills, with demonstrated success in fostering a collaborative, accountable and solution-oriented environment that consistently delivers successful results to the bottom line.

  • Must be innovative, flexible, curious and have exhibited visionary success by identifying and successfully translating market ideas into tangible business solutions. Must have demonstrated success in understanding and prioritizing speed and urgency based on changing market conditions.

  • Must have proven and successful new product launch experience, including intimate familiarity with stage gate processes, filling the innovation funnel, strong supplier relationships and effective product life-cycle planning.
