Job summary

Use your skills to create user-focused documentation, mentor more junior writers on the team, and assist with several major projects. The Red Hat Customer Content Services team is looking for a Senior Technical Writer to join our Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) Documentation team in Westford, MA. In this role, you will join a team that promotes customer loyalty and success through content development and delivery. You will define the scope of, test, and deliver writing projects while maintaining a customer focus by participating in existing feedback programs and consistently developing your technical expertise. Drawing from your passion for both technology and the English language, you'll work closely with developers, engineers, and other subject matter experts to create user-driven technical content that helps our customers understand our offerings and solutions.As a Senior Technical Writer, you should have a thorough knowledge of technical writing fundamentals and experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and other Linux-based operating systems, plus ideally some Git experience. This role will work closely colleagues in the US and in Central Europe. The preferred work locations is a Red Hat office in Westford, MA, Raleigh, NC, or Minneapolis, MN, however, an outstanding candidate elsewhere within North America could also be considered.

Primary job responsibilities

  • Work closely with content strategists, engineering project teams, support teams, and other stakeholders to create and maintain high-quality documentation for upcoming releases of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) documentation

  • Effectively manage documentation projects and deliver customer-focused documentation

  • Engage and collaborate with the customer feedback program to address content gaps, respond to direct customer feedback, and promote continuous improvement of the documentation experience

  • Keep up to date on changes of our offerings, customer use cases, and support issues

  • Master the use of our internal documentation toolchain, including the publishing platform and issue-tracking tools

Required skills

  • Ability to read, write, and compile technical documents, including feature descriptions, customer use cases, and release notes using industry best practices

  • Experience in writing clear and concise procedural documentation for a technical audience

  • Experience in creating documentation that focuses on use cases, using workflows, reference architectures, and modularized topics that are based on content type

  • Ability to learn new authoring tools and publishing tool chains, like AsciiDoc, GitHub/GitLab, Pantheon

  • Comfort and confidence in working closely as part of a product team; advocating for the end user and for the importance of documentation and communicating directly and frequently with the developers and testers

  • Experience with installing and testing the products that you have documented

  • Familiarity with collaborating with globally-distributed teams

  • Knowledge of technical writing fundamentals and experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and other Linux-based OSes, plus ideally some Git experience

The following are considered a plus:

  • Experience with open source projects, Git, and GitHub

  • Knowledge of and preferably experience with Agile methodology

  • Familiarity with Red Hat's enterprise solutions portfolio and related industry offerings

  • Understanding of Linux containers or Docker containers

  • Working knowledge and experience operating in a Linux environment using the command line

  • Understanding of enterprise architecture concepts like n-tier architectures and enterprise integration patterns

  • Bachelor's degree in IT, computer science, or an arts or language field
