The ideal candidate must possess strong scientific expertise in the biopharmaceutical industry, specifically in the ophthalmology space, and knowledge of the ophthalmology corporate landscape.

EyePoint Pharmaceuticals is seeking a passionate and resourceful Senior Director of Business Development. The function is responsible for the full spectrum of BD functions including search, evaluation, negotiation, deal execution and alliance management. This individual will primarily be focused on efforts to identify and evaluate partnership opportunities in the early-to-mid development stage for ophthalmic diseases. Experience with business development opportunities in the complement biology space is a plus. The Senior Director of Business Development will have additional responsibilities that go beyond search and evaluate and will likely include negotiations and alliance management as EyePoint continues to expand its pipeline and portfolio. Additional responsibilities could also include out licensing, ex-US partnering, and strategic planning. The candidate must have a successful track record in business development, including leading internal BD evaluation efforts. The candidate must have early-stage deal experience and/or research collaboration experience. The ideal candidate must present well and be able to represent the Company to potential partners and at industry conferences. This position will be responsible for both scouting activities and evaluation/diligence of novel therapeutic opportunities for both licensing and M&A, while supporting other transactional activities.

The successful candidate will work with and report to the Chief Corporate Development & Strategy Officer. The preferred location will be based in Watertown, MA, or can be a remote position. Remote location on the East Coast is preferred.

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Individual responsibilities

  • Source/identify, present internally, conduct initial evaluation, lead diligence team, negotiate and manage business development transactions from start to finish. These activities will include identification, basic financial analysis / valuation, deal structuring, and contracting in conjunction with the legal and finance team. Also, lead and coordinate internal resources for due diligence, including input on the legal, regulatory, manufacturing and product development aspects of potential transactions. As needed, review and present all significant transactions to the Company’s leadership team.

  • Conduct on-going market assessments to identify attractive opportunities. Identify and assess potential product acquisitions, licensing opportunities, alliances, co-development opportunities and collaborations that meet the strategic goals of the company.

  • Along with the Chief Corporate Development & Strategy Officer, conduct search and evaluation activities and projects to proactively identify and solicit new strategic research partnerships with biotech and pharmaceutical companies, academic institutions, non-profit research or patient organizations. This may include new ways to utilize our platform delivery technology as well as ex-US partnerships on internal assets.

  • In collaboration with R&D organization and Chief Technology Officer and Chief Scientific Officer, lead the activities/input necessary to establish the business case (scientific/ technical evaluation, development plan, market research, market opportunity, competitive intelligence, strategic assessment, appropriate transaction financial structure etc.) and present it to senior leaders in the business.

  • Lead diligence/evaluation teams. Be actively involved in the decision-making process and discussions, presentations to senior management etc.

  • Maintain a detailed tracking report of all interactions with key business development conversations and contacts.

  • Responsible for building business cases; assessing commercial plans, market opportunities, and transaction financial structure for prospective partners.

Primary skills and knowledge required include, but are not limited to the following:

  • A demonstrated knowledge and experience in building an industry Business Development network.

  • A strong track record of identifying, evaluating and leading internal teams on successful deals (acquisitions/in-licensing, technology licenses) will be a pre-requisite, with clear examples. Please include a deal sheet with a description of the role you played on the transaction.

  • Display strong interpersonal skills and work with multiple internal stakeholders to drive and support highly visible and time-sensitive business development projects.

  • Ability to establish and maintain relationships with academic institutions, vendors, biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, and the VC community.

  • Ability to co-lead with transactions to develop and deliver scientific, clinical, technical, and commercial assessments and evaluations to the relevant internal governance bodies

  • Business development experience within pre-clinical and/or clinical stage business development.

  • Attention to detail and the ability to work individually, within a multi-disciplinary team, as well as with external partners and vendors.

  • Possesses strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience with business development opportunities in the complement biology space a plus.

  • Has experience in financial modeling and must be financially fluent.

  • Travel as dictated by business needs

Level of Education Required:

  • PhD, PharmD, or other advanced degree in the biomedical field preferred. Demonstrated scientific / medical knowledge is critical.

Number of Years of Experience in the Function and in the Industry:

  • Minimum 10 years of relevant experience within the biopharmaceutical industry or related biotech/healthcare practice with a strong background in Ophthalmology; at least 5 of which in Business Development
