Job Purpose

This role will lead on data culture and literacy across the Group and look for the right opportunities to increase these capabilities so that National Grid can achieve greater success with data. This role will establish the business value link to data and help Business Units with expertise and methods to identify, document and measure value from data. This role must establish, maintain, and evolve a data strategy governance model that provides visibility of progress of the Group and Business Unit Data & Analytics Strategies.

Key Accountabilities

  • Establish and maintain the Group Data & Analytics Strategy, Operating Model and Roadmap

  • Develop and implement an enterprise-wide data strategy governance framework with a focus on monitoring progress in Group and across BUs with Data Strategy delivery progress

  • Establish methods and artefacts to help BUs identify data use cases and value

  • Work with the BU’s to define metrics to measure improvements in data literacy, value realised from investments in data programs

  • Define a strategy for Data Culture and Literacy improvements in National Grid and link to value

  • Developing a high performing team (initially two direct reports) to work across the business units to support them in defining and implementing their data strategies.


  • Be passionate and visionary about data and able to inspire others to challenge and disrupt the current reality and most importantly of all, able to take people along with you.

  • Possess previous experience and thought leadership in Data Strategy at an enterprise level.

  • Have extensive knowledge of creating data strategies, data operating models and strategy roadmaps

  • Have a commercial view of data applications, be able to establish where data and analytics can provide the best commercial opportunities for a business

  • Present with gravitas and credibility to build strong relationships, and collaborate, with a wide variety of internal stakeholders and maintain an expert external network

  • Demonstrate significant EQ skills to work with others in a matrix environment to achieve technology results interfacing across global delivery centres and in the wider business at all levels

  • Be an inspirational leader, able to excite and develop internal and external ecosystem teams to deliver high performance

  • Be able to communicate and co-ordinate multiple tasks simultaneously in a complex and dynamic organization, ensuring an effective balance between internally and externally facing activities

  • Demonstrate technical credibility and independent judgment and decision-making responsibilities

  • Be able to think strategically and articulate a vision of transformation to key stakeholders identifying "what's in it for them"

  • Have strong relationship management and facilitation skills

  • Understand how data acts as a key enabler for change and an accelerator within the utility industry’s digital sector and ambitions

  • Have experience in a technical leadership role within a data program
