National Grid Stakeholder Management Specialist (Sr/Lead) in Waltham, Massachusetts

About the Position:

The Stakeholder Specialist is responsible for meeting the outreach and education needs of National Grid’s gas and electric complex capital infrastructure improvement projects. As part of multiple project teams, the Specialist will be responsible for a multimillion dollar portfolio of complex construction projects, implementing strategic community relations campaigns to safeguard the on-time and on-or-under budget build-out of these projects.

Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  • Represent the Company as the Subject Matter Expert for stakeholder and community relations for complex construction projects

  • Manage the outreach and education needs of a fluid portfolio of electric and gas complex capital projects

  • Utilizing complex project input and information gathered from greater project team, develop and maintain the overall communications strategy and outreach plans for the portfolio of complex capital projects in alignment with US Strategic Communication and Community & Customer Management strategies

  • Build and maintain long-term professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders within a defined geographic footprint in support of complex capital projects.

  • Develop project messaging, boiling technical information down to messaging that is easily understood by the layperson

  • Responsible for writing and submitting project notices, with some required by regulation

  • Work with the project permitting team to assist in drafting permit applications

  • Plan and execute project-related events, including open houses and public statement hearings

  • Develop informational and marketing collateral for a variety of audiences, including internal and external stakeholders in support of the complex projects

  • Work with stakeholders throughout planning, permitting, construction, and post-construction phases of the project to solve issues around project impacts, including noise, traffic, visual, recreation, etc.

  • Maintenance of the internal relationship with Real Estate and Asset Management regarding all project real estate needs and issues.

  • Engage VPs, Directors and Managers of Electric/ Gas Process & Engineering, Customer & Markets, Legal, Environmental, and Project Managers to ensure community and municipal relationship management is embedded into National Grid’s standard practice for all complex capital projects

  • Facilitate and participate in the permitting and licensing teams to address concerns and issues that drive project process improvement

  • Work with the Stakeholder Relations team to develop metrics and other information that demonstrate progress and effectiveness of the department's efforts.

  • Provided emergency response and on-call duties for storm restoration efforts, outage coordination, and support for customer service as needed

  • Maintain competent utility industry knowledge including, energy efficiency, energy services, electric and gas distribution and transmission, the ISO, cogeneration, and the energy marketplace

Knowledge and Experience Required:

  • Work within a team to plan and execute for outreach and education, and to respond to stakeholder questions

  • Develop and maintain professional relationships

  • Manage the execution of outreach plans with internal stakeholders across disciplines (e.g., Strategic Communications, Jurisdiction, Economic Development, etc.)

  • Communicate complex engineering, environmental, construction, and regulatory information

  • Develop informative, professional letters and collateral

  • Plan and execute successful events in potentially contentious environments

  • Problem solving using critical thinking and analysis

  • Work with internal stakeholders across disciplines to explain project information, and prepare them with appropriate project messaging

  • Work with department team members to improve processes

  • Train project team members and contractors on community relations issues for complex projects

  • Excellent verbal, presentation and written communication skills and the ability to write reports and develop presentations for senior management and external audiences as required.

  • Available for 24/7 emergency coverage, evening meetings and presentations.

  • Travel required, including off-hours

  • Valid driver’s license with a safe driving history required.

Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Communications, Political Science, Environmental Science, or other related field, and4years of related experience

  • Experience with customer, community, and municipal relations

  • Proficient in relevant software, including Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop)

  • Strong writing skills, including official documents and marketing materials

  • Strong verbal communication skills, including public speaking, with experience in communicating in potentially contentious forums

  • Proficient project management and time management skills

  • Knowledge of the utility industry, including infrastructure and service

  • Knowledge of utility permitting, including permitting processes overseen by the New York State Public Service Commission
