Responsibilities

The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a Managing Editor in our National Center office. This position will be located in Waltham, MA .

The Managing Editor is responsible for the coordination and efficient management of budget, staff, and activities for AHA’s professional scientific publishing vehicles. This entails coordination and oversight of these functions at the National Center, in the AHA’s Editorial Offices, and with external partners.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Manage revenue and budget for established portfolio while identifying potential cost savings and revenue gains.

  • Facilitate journal manuscript flow at all stages of the peer review process until acceptance of manuscripts, through to the transfer of accepted articles to the publisher for print and electronic production while meeting all production schedule deadlines.

  • Direct, manage, and develop staff to meet the department and AHA goals

  • Management of project timelines, deadline compliance and effective communication and dissemination of both.

  • Establishing trusted relationships with volunteers including communication expectation building and anticipation of needs.

  • Strategically working with OSO, internal departments and affiliates to meet department goals and establish OSO as a leader in AHA.

  • Provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers and volunteers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communication, Science, and/or other related field of study.

  • Minimum of two (2) years of related experience.

  • Strong knowledge of editorial development and peer review in scientific journal or book publishing.

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of project management.

  • Strong knowledge of and familiarity with computer-based tracking systems for editorial and project management, especially peer review management software.

  • Knowledge of web-based production, HTML coding, etc.

  • Ability to travel to meet with partner organizations, editors, and vendors.

  • Ability to meet and deal with all levels of AHA staff, volunteers, and senior management from other non-profit and for-profit organizations.

  • Demonstrated customer service skills.

  • Must have the ability to travel overnight up to 10%.
