The Editorial Director is a key leadership role within the legal education team, and regularly contributes to strategy and policy discussions with the General Manager and Directors.

The Editorial Director provides daily oversight to a department of five Managing Editors who all participate in driving revenue growth for assigned titles within a list segment or portfolio by (1) ensuring appropriate content development and timely publication of assigned products and their accompanying ancillaries and (2) effectively managing assigned products throughout their life cycle and (3) ensuring regular, detailed and accurate list performance metrics/reporting in order to diagnose weakness and enhance strengths.

In addition, the Editorial Director is responsible for establishing the revenue priorities, publication plans, and schedules specific to customer needs. This position participates in determining the business objectives for each list and then works closely with each editor to create and manage plans, schedules, and talent to execute on those objectives. The Editorial Director will liaise with and coach editors on gathering input and testing ideas with a broad range of stakeholders, inside and outside the company and will be comfortable with presenting content and good at pitching ideas to others; S/He works closely with Sales, Marketing, Operations and Digital to ensure the appropriate go-to-market strategies are in place and will assist the Publisher in broad initiatives to ensure customers' expectations and needs are met through all products and services. The Editorial Director works closely with the Senior Manager of Production and with Development and will intervene early and often to ensure products are on schedule and on budget.

  • Responsible for day to day management of editorial team

  • In collaboration with Publisher, ensures tight list management across portfolios

  • Works closely with editors to generate ideas for new non-core-content products and services; presents and secures approval for new ideas and develops business plans

  • Ensures market-oriented editorial content development and timely publication of new and revised products and accompanying support materials/services; oversees the work of freelance development editors

  • Ensures that editors continually track financial performance of assigned titles against sales goals

  • Facilitates editorial partnership with marketing, digital and sales to develop effective products

  • Working with the editorial team, ensures accuracy of product information and timely flow of metadata

  • Ensures that editors apply competitive landscape understanding to inform product development, release date planning, and marketing materials

  • Work closely with the Editorial and Acquisitions team to understand list gaps and signing priorities to ensure cohesive publishing between new and revised titles

  • Plays proactive role in facilitating regular communication with customers (adopters) and translating needs, pain points, and opportunities into strategic product plans

  • Ensures editorial partnership with marketing in order to inform effective strategic marketing campaigns for new and revised products

  • Conduct independent research, including interviews and partnering with internal resources, to develop deep market expertise on topics important to the publishing industry

  • Manage freelance partners, workflow, and expenses and escalate any issues to Publisher

  • Other duties as assigned by manager

Education: B.A. or B.S in Journalism, Communications, English or related field minimum or equivalent; MBA, J.D. or other graduate degree desirable but not required

Experience:

  • 8-15 years of educational publishing experience, focusing on editorial development/list management

  • Experience managing people, lists and portfolios of increasing complexity

Other Knowledge, Skills, Abilities or Certifications:

  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, PPT, Excel) and Adobe Acrobat (PDF)

  • Proven executional abilities and experience meeting tight deadlines and juggling multiple responsibilities

  • Excellent communicator: good listening, probing, and qualification abilities and ability to manage tough conversation with authors and internal stakeholders

  • Demonstrated relationship building skills with industry authors and internal colleagues

  • Strong presentation and public speaking skills

  • Analytical and solutions oriented mindset with demonstrated ability to leverage data and analytics to inform decisions

  • Deep understanding of the educational publishing industry and ability to develop solutions that will provide a competitive edge

  • PMP preferred

  • Some experience working with CMS and multiple digital formats, including web, mobile, social media, infographics and more preferred but not required
