Staff Level Technical Writer

(US Citizenship Required*)

Taunton, MA


  • Create, develop, plan, write, and edit complex operational, instructional, interactive electronic technical manuals (IETMs), maintenance or test procedures for paper, multimedia or web-based publication

  • Interview various users and technical staff to gather data for documentation

  • Research and translate technical information into manuals and/or web-based documents for nontechnical & technical users

  • Acquire subject knowledge by interviewing product developers, observing performance of production methods, referring to technical specifications, blueprints, engineering illustrations, and trade journals

  • Recommend formats

  • Respond to technical and customer requirements

  • Create products conforming to the company documentation and quality assurance standards

  • Mentor junior writers: provide feedback, critique work to assist developing leadership & documentation skills, and expertise with production tools, projects, etc, recommend skills improvement, help set objective

  • Research new production tools and 3rd party software to improve work processes; solve current workflow problems and suggest to management ways to improve our documentation process

  • Provide recommendations and ideas to the technical documentation team, leads, management and customer on best work practices, workflow, presentation, structure and organization of materials

  • Develop new work processes/methods using existing authoring tools, new authoring tools and 3rd party plugins to improve work process efficiency and overall quality of customer deliverables

  • Plan, budget and schedule technical writing projects including coordinating work assignments with other members of the technical documents team; lead teams/large projects

  • Support CMMI efforts by defining methods and procedures on new assignments

  • Document engineering processes and specifications by editing software developer and engineering staff's notes; apply formatting to support writing and publishing hardware & software test procedures, white papers, readme files, etc.

  • Proactively inform management team and project leads to report project status, issues or concerns, including issues of scope, schedule

  • Ensure accurate preparation of documents for interim and final delivery to customer by creating and preparing materials (agendas, etc.) to facilitate various validations and verifications of manuals with the customer

  • Work under very limited supervision and no instruction on day-to-day work

  • Travel may be required

  • Able to obtain a Secret Security Clearance

  • Uses professional concepts and company objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways

  • Some barriers to entry exist at this level (e.g., dept/peer review)

  • English language skills including accurate definitions and spelling of relevant technical words, rules of composition, and grammar

  • Written communication skills; effectively communicates with the target audience

  • Able to research and interpret data

  • Working knowledge of DoD MIL Standards and style guides; can adhere to/implement standards to technical documentation

  • Considered an expert in several areas of their job (production tools, projects, DoD MIL STD, IETMs, etc.)

  • Proficient with editing and production tools (FrameMaker, MS Word, Arbor Text, etc.)

  • Knowledge of publication systems

  • Team leader skills with ability to supervise and excellent people skills

  • Time management and organizational skills

  • Able to manage and lead complex tasks from kick off to delivery

  • Customer interface skills and sensitivity to customer satisfaction

  • Communications skills with teammates, direct management, program management, engineering/technical staff

  • Exercises considerable latitude in determining objectives and approaches to assignment

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Technical Writing, English, or in a related area, or equivalent is required plus a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree plus a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience
