Staples Interior Designer - Technical Design Team (this position can be located anywhere within the U.S.) in stoneham, Massachusetts

Position Summary:

The primary role of the Interior Designer, Technical is to use their extensive product knowledge, general workplace insights, and speed to task to produce the design work needed on a national basis for our most rapid requests, including the mid-market segment. This position demands a high level of organization, speed, focus and specification accuracy. They also consult with sales people to apply the correct product to the correct solution. This role offers assistance to the greater design team for product solutions and building code questions, as they are required to have a rich understanding of various local, state and national needs. Their day-to-day roles and responsibilities include providing product insights and spatial solutions, space planning, product specification, isometric and plan view drawings, and installation drawings. This role must develop and execute detailed space plans & specifications, to address customer space requirements and budget, within a very precise time frame. Additionally, they assist in training interior designers on product, codes, and other general subjects as needed.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Presents solutions to sales and coordinates work with internal clients.

  • Provides oversight and review of design related to specification checks/audits, code reviews, and coordination of details related to the project management requirements.

  • Coach and train other Interior Designers as necessary, and directed by Design Managers.

  • Provide design services including but not limited to producing 2D/3D drawings, specifications, and renderings

  • Pre-Design and Programming: Interpreting project needs through information supplied by the internal client, assisting internal client with scope clarification, and product selection as needed.

  • Conceptual and Schematic Phase: Creative and innovative design concepts that address user needs, work flow, brand identity, budgets, timeframes, integration of existing products, typicals and furnishing standards, and the integration of a cohesive design statement. Familiar with local and national codes and ADA.

  • Design Development: Space planning, furniture product selection as needed and specification and application in AutoCad, Cap, Visual Impressions and other software tools as available. Moderate/Advanced product specification and application knowledge.

  • Specifications and Quoting: Provides furniture specifications in form of CAP Worksheet.

  • Provide project record keeping and storage of design documents throughout project, and design information tracking.

  • Coordinates and attends all required meetings and appointments timely.

  • Participates in continuing education and training as made available.

Qualifications

Essential Skills Required:

  • Must demonstrate a high level of thought leadership, design strategy and an overall understanding of the workplace, and workplace design theories.

  • Specific understanding and application of theories or principles of commercial interiors and business in general.

  • Must have an extensive depth of knowledge for product lines used across the country, as well as some that are used only in local/regional markets.

  • Skilled in design oversight and review relative to codes, prevailing laws, and constructability. Must have knowledge of national requirements such as ADA, as well as various local/regional restrictions on a national platform.

  • Ability to work well under pressure, with strict time line requirements and with precise accuracy in specification.

  • Ability to balance and prioritize multiple projects and adjust work according to team specific time line and customer requirements.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Skilled in AutoCad and Cap and other technical design programs.

  • Human relations skills required to motivate and influence internal customer.

  • Training and Coaching skills to assist as needed with other Interior Designers at any level within the organization.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • 4 Year Interior Design Degree (CIDA accredited) OR

  • 2 Year Interior Design Degree (CIDA accredited)

  • 4-6 years post education work experience in the Design and Furniture Industry
