American Outdoor Brands Corporation Copywriter in Springfield, Massachusetts

Reporting to the Creative Director, the Copywriter will work closely with Smith & Wesson's in-house Ad Agency. The Copywriter is an expert storyteller who works closely with our Creative Team and marketing strategists to conceive and create concepts for integrated advertising campaigns in both traditional and digital channels.

Education and Experience:

  • BA in English, communications, journalism, marketing or a related field or equivalent experience.

  • 5-8 years of professional writing experience crafting high-quality copy within a creative or agency environment.

Competencies and Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of the mechanics of writing: punctuation, spelling, structure and organization. Must be grammatically competent and literate.

  • Ability to write in multiple styles in accordance with a brand's tone or voice. Familiarity with different writing styles and methods.

  • Excellent written communication skills (both creative and imaginative ability with a technical knowledge of the English language and attention to details (grammar).

  • Familiarity with Search Engine Marketing and Optimization strategies.

  • Self-motivated, good organizational skills, detail-oriented, ability to prioritize.

  • The ability to multi-task across brands and meet tight deadlines.

  • Strong portfolio of work that demonstrates expertise in copywriting with experience working on a variety of multi-channel campaigns across print, digital, and video/tv.

  • Expert MS Office skills.

  • Knowledge of firearms/shooting sports products is preferred; ability to write in a manner that connects with our shooting and hunting consumer/audience

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Create and communicate concepts by applying brand level awareness as well as campaign tactics.

  • Develop the written tone, brand voice, and feel of advertising to be executed in various media.

  • Offer strategic and innovative solutions, add/contribute to client meetings, present creative work.

  • Partner with Art Directors and designers for the timely development and execution of campaigns and projects, including concepting and execution of final deliverables.

  • Collaborate with the Creative Director to understand client goals, strategy, messaging hierarchy, product positioning, business objectives, and target audiences.

  • Work closely with project teams to develop headlines, supporting copy, features & benefits, and calls-to-action across integrated campaign deliverables.

  • Contribute concepts/ideas and writing to new product launches, Video/TV scripts, collateral, website content, and social media projects.

  • Write scripts that tell a story, convey a mood, and inspire an emotional response.

  • Must be a strategic and creative thinker with integrated campaign experience as well as the ability to wordsmith and generate content for Video/TV, digital ads, websites, blogs, catalogs, brochures, and other print materials.

  • The ideal candidate must be detail oriented, able to work on multiple projects simultaneously, and proactively research information as it pertains to your projects.

  • Operate with a customer service mindset prioritizing work efficiently to meet both internal stakeholders and external customer demand.

  • Work closely with Creative Director and Marketing Team to truly understand the voice of the customer and keep that voice consistent and top of mind across all channels when crafting internal and external communications.

  • Write clear, concise, and conversational copy, including both short-form and long-form both online and for traditional channels.

  • Understand and implement SEO best practices, theory, and adhere to it.

  • Brainstorm, concept, collaborate, and present various copy options to the Creative Director and Marketing teams which may or may not be rejected or redeveloped into actionable workable concepts (we promise, it's not personal).

  • Work closely with the Customer Service Team to effectively understand our customer base and craft customer specific messages as needed.

  • Work with stakeholders to craft internal communications when necessary.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands:

  • Works in an office environment.

  • Able to sit and work at a computer keyboard for extended periods of time.

Work Environment and Personal Protective Equipment:

Within any of our facilities, employees may be exposed to manufacturing noise, airborne liquid chemicals, fine particulate dust, ambient temperatures, and industrial lighting. Work environment is similar to most manufacturing and distribution operations. May be exposed to excessive noise, temperatures, hazards associated with working around moving machinery, work in confined quarters, exposure to vibrations and shop lighting, continuous exposure to hot temperatures, may be humid, odors, dust, continuous exposure to mechanical hazards, and occasional exposure to chemical hazards.

The following Personal Protective Equipment is required:

  • Safety glasses with side shields and hearing protection required when on manufacturing floor

The use of additional personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required when a job task(s) is being completed in or around your assigned department or in another department, this includes safety eyewear, hearing protection, and safety footwear.
