Olympus America Inc. Product Manager, Upstream Marketing - ENT in Southborough, Massachusetts

Job Duties::

As an Upstream Marketing Product Manager working on the OSTA ENT team, you will be empowered and inspired to do your best work. You will contribute to our mission by helping the team to execute and drive the execution of the funded and approved new product development projects, helping to define the strategy for our segment of the ENT space identifying and proposing new opportunities for investment and putting together the right sustaining programs to expand and grow our current portfolio. In a typical day you will:

  • Ensure that all business requirements and stage gate deliverables under the scope of Upstream Marketing are executed in an effective and timely manner for all Technology Development Projects (TDP) and Product Development Projects under his/her scope of responsibility.

  • Maintain responsibility for outlining the preliminary plan on how to execute these deliverables, as well as which activities will require internal Business Intelligence support, which activities will require external support. They will propose associated resources, timelines, budgets and anticipated areas of risks to execute marketing deliverables to plan and gain alignment and direction from the Program Manager as well as their Functional Manager.

  • Develop in depth knowledge and clinical expertise in areas of responsibility. This includes being actively engaged in product trainings, field visits, industry trade shows, trainings, HCP engagements, etc.

  • Foster and maintain key relationships with Key Opinion Leaders in the clinical spaces of interest.

  • Gather voice of customer to develop clear user requirements for future product offerings, and helps in creation of product specifications in collaboration with R&D and OEM partners.

  • Work closely with functional manager and Business Intelligence Team as well as Downstream Marketing counterparts to understand market dynamics and competitive landscape for clinical space of responsibility understanding linkage to product roadmap and Business Unit Strategy.

  • Iteratively perform research and work with R&D to evaluate and benchmark competitive portfolios.

  • Assist with executing the annual product roadmap plan.

  • Develop product strategies, market positioning, pricing, programs, competitive analysis and distribution pathways to best support existing product categories and the growth into international markets.

  • Work closely with R&D or individually in identifying unmet customer needs for new product/business opportunity and assisting R&D in developing the concepts/prototypes/invention disclosures/patents. This involves understanding the clinical need, translating clinical needs to a product, working with BI team and functional manager to develop a business case for the opportunity and presenting business case to Sr. Management.

  • Arrange animal/cadaver labs for the purpose of product testing/evaluation/training, including identifying surgeon investigators.

  • Support the Product Development team in writing the lab protocols, preparing interview guides, collecting feedback during evaluations and analysis of the data collected.

  • Coordinate activities with Healthcare Professionals to understand clinical and technical attributes of current and future products.

  • Work in close collaboration with regional downstream marketing, develop initial marketing commercialization plan, which contains the launch plan and regional collateral for new products, plans for global training, competitive assessment and benchmarking to support effective regional product introductions.

  • Perform all other related duties as directed.

The Product Manager of Upstream Marketing- ENT will be responsible for managing the global marketing product development responsibilities and for delivering on all Marketing commitments throughout the stages of the projects under his/her area of responsibility with minimal direction. This will be applicable for both new product introductions and lifecycle management projects that have been assigned. The incumbent will also oversee the worldwide sales for legacy products within his/her areas of responsibility. The incumbent will interface closely with R&D, International/Downstream Marketing, Sales, RA/QA, and Operations functions to establish potential for revenue, profit, and market share. These key metrics are used to decide on the path for possible product commercialization. The Product Manager also works closely with regional customers and users to define user requirements for new products and then work with all functional areas to translate these user requirements into specifications, marketing claims and clinical indications for use. This role requires the development of intimate clinical knowledge for all ENT specialities (Rhinology, Otology and Laryngology), identification of unmet customer needs, monitoring of market, competitive, & technological dynamics/trends, as well as demographic factors to capitalize on market. He/She will work closely with Downstream Marketing counterpart(s) of each region during the requirements building and global strategy planning and continue all the way to formal launch and transitioning of the product to commercialization. The incumbent will work closely with R&D to develop new products and evaluate them with identified clinicians.

Job Requirements::


  • Bachelor’s Degree is required; Master’s Degree is preferred.

  • Minimum of 5 years of business experience is required (ideal candidate will have a blend of R&D and Upstream Marketing or Upstream & Downstream Marketing or Sales).

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in new product development or successful new product/market introductions within Medical Devices.


  • Demonstrated track record in Market Research in either up front early stage or in existing markets for commercialization or expansion of existing products.

  • Experience participating in VOC (Voice of Customer) and developing physician relationships preferred.

  • Demonstrated track record in achieving results, profitability, growth, and business leadership in the medical device market is preferred.

  • Thrives in a team environment and experienced in working in an environment of competing priorities managing multiple projects.

  • Excellent communication skills with experience in developing messaging to different target audiences and levels within the organization.

  • Experience presenting to large audiences.
