Job Description


Kollmorgen is proud to offer innovative products that meet the needs of our highly technical Industrial Automation customers. To help us continue to grow, we’re in search of an experienced product manager to lead our multi-disciplinary development teams. As an ideal candidate, you will have a keen eye for unmet needs and the innovative mindset to fill them. You’re a highly skilled product marketer with a proven ability to strategize the full lifecycle of platforms and products — from conception through release through obsolescence. You may already be a confident leader who has experience guiding cross-functional teams in the successful creation of products that improve customer experience and grow market share.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure Kollmorgen’s platforms, products, and marketing efforts support the company’s overall strategy and growth, market share and profit margin goals

  • Serve as a company product evangelist and subject matter expert

  • Drive the global product and business-planning process across cross-functional teams of the company

  • Assess current competitor offerings and gather customer feedback, seeking opportunities for differentiation

  • Appraise new product ideas and strategize appropriate go-to-market plans

  • Drive the execution of all product lifecycle processes for platforms and products, including product research, market research, competitive analysis, planning, positioning, roadmap development, requirements development, and product launch

  • Translate product strategy and unmet customer needs into detailed requirements for platforms and products (MRD, QFD, etc.) with prioritized features, cost targets and corresponding justification

  • Collaborate closely with engineering, production, marketing, and sales teams on the development, quality, and release of products and balance of resources to ensure success for the entire organization; this includes make/buy analysis

  • Run beta and pilot programs with early-stage products and samples to plant seeds and obtain customer feedback that breeds a successful launch

  • Help assure products are launched on time at the target cost, quality, and manufacturing lead-time by confirming technical specifications and priorities are aligned with MRD; make decisions (or escalate) that create the most long-term value for Kollmorgen

  • Formulate and run obsolescence activities

  • Provide End of Life forecasting to operations

  • Work internally on management approvals

  • Work with marketing communications on messaging, methodology

  • Determine pricing strategy & drive lifecycle status implementation for products as they move into Obsolete or Kill status

  • Drive margin optimization & pricing strategy projects for current product offerings

  • Analyze market data to develop sales and channel strategies, and define product objectives for effective marketing communications plans

  • Develop product positioning and messaging that differentiates Kollmorgen and its features across primary market segments

  • Work with Kollmorgen’s OSP/OI Team to assess third party partnerships and licensing opportunities where appropriate

  • Conduct market research

  • Develop the core positioning and messaging for the products

  • Develop sales tools and collateral, teach the sales team how to perform product demos to customers

  • Set and maintain product pricing, according to position and value relative to the competitive landscape and next-best alternatives, to meet revenue and profitability goals

  • Deliver regular revenue forecasts

  • Brief and train the sales force at regular intervals

  • Facilitate the creation and maintenance of proper product documentation

  • Understand technical and commercial aspects of industrial automation products, especially competitive analysis

  • Manage communication between factory and field sales and support teams for large account projects

  • Screen, prioritize and quote new business opportunities through business assessment, presentation to senior management and commercial team facilitation

Job Requirements

  • Capable of making tough, technical or user experience decisions with an adequate amount of data; confident to present results to internal management, coworkers, and customers

  • Continuous improvement driven, understanding that imperfections exist; work to better the organization with a lens to profitably improve customer experience

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a B2B Product Manager in a technical field

  • Strong preference given to industrial servo and/or stepper motion experience in sales, marketing, or engineering capacity

  • Proven success defining & launching, as the Product Manager, one or more major platforms/products

  • Previous experience selling technical products with 6 – 24 months’ sales cycle

  • Exceptional leadership skills

  • Proven ability to influence cross-functional teams without formal authority (comfortable working in a matrix organization)

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE), similar technical degree, or equivalent industrial automation product management work experience required

  • MBA is a plus

  • Must have valid driver’s license and be able to travel 30-50% of the time

  • Attention to detail and good problem-solving skills

  • Excellent interpersonal & teamwork skills

  • Good written and verbal communication

  • Experience with lean manufacturing concepts and practices is a plus
