Saint-Gobain Group Leader-Design in Northborough, Massachusetts
Saint-Gobain – a global leader in building, industrial, automotive, aerospace, and medical product innovation – is looking for a creative, entrepreneurial Design leader who shares our passion for improving the experience, sustainability, and economics of the world around us. The candidate will be responsible for leading a nimble, passionate Design team (5+ people) tasked with identifying and developing new products for the commercial and residential construction markets. The candidate will work on product development – from concept to launch – directing a cross-functional team of industrial, architectural, and mechanical designers, all working closely with R&D, sales, marketing, and operations.
As the Design Group Leader you will work to foster and lead a team to assist in all aspects of the design process, including customer insights, conceptualizing, designing, prototyping, researching manufacturing techniques, pilot sales, and supporting full product launches. You will also be responsible for strategically designing your team’s project portfolio, as well as assisting in developing the overall R&D strategy.
Applicants should have extensive experience in working directly with a variety of customers and end-users to understand market needs and test solution hypothesis. Candidate should also have experience leading other designers – ideally from multiple fields. We are looking for individuals with creativity, intelligence, passion, and drive – as well as exceptional communication, organization, design skills, and strategic thinking – to instill and reinforce a development philosophy and culture of customer empathy, fast and early failure, iteration, focus amid ambiguity, candor and critique, and a lean, entrepreneurial mindset.
Candidate must be an innovative, “intrapreneur” with the ability and motivation to lead fast-paced, agile product development with a bias for action and results. Candidate must possess collaboration skills, strong project and time management skills, solid technical and problem solving skills, and excellent verbal communication and writing skills. Travel, up to 35%, domestic and international is required for customer visits, technical meetings and collaboration, factory visits, and seminars. Saint-Gobain is based in Paris, but you will work with collaborators in nearly every continent.
The role itself is located in Northboro, MA – about 1hr west of Boston – co-located with Saint-Gobain’s major, North American R&D center: a five-building campus surrounded by wooded walking trails and comprising mostly of laboratory and prototyping space, housing 300 scientists, engineers, business functions, and designers. This role also has a secondary office and prototyping space
A degree in Industrial Design, Architecture, or Mechanical Design. A Master’s degree with 10+ years of experience, or a Bachelor’s degree with 15+ years of experience.
A successful track record of managing multidisciplinary teams of at least 5 people, including hiring, performance reviews, and other HR-related management responsibilities.
Deep experience participating in and leading the process of collecting customer insights at all project stages.
Highly desirable but not required is experience within the building industry experience, or experience in other industries that exhibit a complex network of customers, stakeholders, aesthetic and performance requirements, and strong regulatory influence.
Energetic, entrepreneurial drive to action and results, with demonstrated strong personal and team accomplishments, team leadership, and a track-record for the development and commercialization of new products.
Comfortably working with power tools for prototyping purposes, previous construction experience a plus.
Working in a matrix organization, the candidate will be able to communicate and interact effectively with a range of people including business, manufacturing, and research managers, process engineers, technicians, and operators.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work well on both large Research and Development Teams as well as independently.
Knowledge of current building codes & standards with an understanding of current construction methods a plus.
Strong presentation demeanor.
