Smith College Deputy Director Museum of Art in Northampton, Massachusetts

NORTHAMPTON Deputy Director, Museum of Art The Deputy Director occupies a critical leadership position within the museum, collaborating closely with the museum\'s Director and Chief Curator and the Senior Leadership Team on aligning museum operations with the organization\'s mission, strategic priorities, and core values. The Deputy Director supervises essential museum functions including visitor experience, safety, finance, and retail. They are responsible for developing long-term financial strategies that support the museum\'s organizational priorities and, with the Senior Leadership Team, they play a key role in promoting collaborative and inclusive ways of working across museum departments. The Deputy Director of Strategy & Operations coordinates with campus partners on facilities operation and maintenance of the museum building and serves as a primary liaison to the College\'s Human Resources, Information Technology, and Sponsored Research and Grants teams. In the absence of the Director and Chief Curator, this position is charged with day-to-day leadership decisions. Minimum Qualifications (knowledge, skills, education, experience, certifications, licenses) Education/Experience: Bachelor\'s degree in Arts Administration, Business Administration, or a related field required plus a minimum of eight years in senior level administration and/or financial management required, with five years in non-profit management capacity preferred or an equivalent combination of education/experience. Preferred Qualifications Masters preferred. Applied knowledge of museum practices and principles. Demonstrated commitment to supporting learning and to building collaborations and partnerships with diverse stakeholders. Skills Significant team-building and supervisory experience in non-profit environment; demonstrated inclusive leadership skills; outstanding written and verbal communication skills; highest level presentation, negotiation, project management, and problem-solving skills required; excellent planning, financial management, and organizational skills; strong professional network; collaborative management style; demonstrated passion for the visual arts; strong work ethic and superior record of ethical service; proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
