International Data Group Research Director, Future of Digital Infrastructure in Needham, Massachusetts

We have an exciting new position to lead the "Future of Digital Infrastructure" research program, one of several visionary (Future of X) research practices being launched by IDC to address the ongoing technology, deployment model, and operational changes transforming the IT infrastructure industry.
This Research Director will have a strategic big-picture understanding of IT Infrastructure, with forward-looking insights into how software-defined infrastructure, IT automation, security, and cloud-centric operations will help CxOs select, deploy and operate digital infrastructure across a range of deployment options and locations. The role requires familiarity with key infrastructure-related hardware, software and services markets (e.g., compute, storage, network), and a working knowledge of IT operations and cloud adoption trends as they pertain to executive-level decisions. This individual's focus will be on associating and correlating these developments in the context of infrastructure decisions that impact metrics such as total cost of ownership, business value and results, IT efficiency and productivity, return on investment, and competitive disruption. The position requires regular writing on industry developments, including insightful and provocative thought leadership covering emerging trends, creation of custom deliverables for specific clients, and broad collaboration across IDC.
Some of the required areas of experience and familiarity include:
Evolution of enterprise applications landscape and its implications for IT Infrastructure demand and deployment
Current and next-gen infrastructure technologies
Advantages/challenges associated with multiple infrastructure deployment options (core, network, edge)
Software-defined compute, virtualization and containerization technologies
Knowledge of public and private cloud, and hybrid/multi-cloud services (including IaaS, PaaS and SaaS)
Knowledge of cloud-based analytics and visibility and related software tools/platforms
Next-gen IT Operations and related automation and intelligence requirements
Infrastructure transformation strategies and transition to agile, flexible/as-a-service consumption models
Security management related topics especially as they pertain to confidential computing and trusted infrastructure

Grow the Future of Digital Infrastructure research program through thought leadership, published research and business development
Assure that the research requirements of the programs are met on a timely basis
Support client inquiry related to research reports and topics pertinent to research
Coordinate the Future of Digital Infrastructure research with other IDC's FoX and enterprise infrastructure practices and teams
Work with IDC's WW and regional analysts; identify and engage on collaborative research initiatives
Contribute research and thought leadership to consulting projects
Bachelor's degree required, MBA a plus; or equivalent experience
10+ years industry knowledge working in product, strategy or marketing roles
Experience across infrastructure vendor, service provider, cloud provider, systems integrator or analyst/consulting firm is preferred
Able to evaluate, communicate clearly and add value to conversations with C-level executives and corporate strategy teams at end customers and leading industry players
Ability to collect industry trends, and present the larger transformation story
Ability to quickly synthesize data from various sources – interviews, surveys, secondary research and tie it to relevant IDC research
A passion for collaborative working in an entrepreneurial environment
Excellent speaking and writing skills
Willingness/ability to travel to various events as required for presentations or engaging with customers (30-40%), post-COVID
