Lawrence General Hospital HFH ED Medical Director in Methuen, Massachusetts
The Medical Director, Emergency Department, Holy Family Hospital shall be responsible for the clinical and administrative leadership of the Emergency Departments at Methuen and Haverhill. The Medical Director’s duties shall include, but are not limited to, the following:
I. Clinical Leadership
Ensure high-quality, evidence-based medical care is delivered to all patients in the Emergency Department.
Maintain active clinical practice within the Emergency Department, as required by the hospital.
Develop and oversee clinical protocols, guidelines, and policies to standardize and improve patient care.
Monitor and improve key performance indicators, including patient throughput, door-to-provider times, quality metrics, and patient experience scores.
Promote a culture of patient safety, quality improvement, and adherence to best practices.
Ensure compliance with hospital policies, federal and state regulations, and accreditation standards.
Provide direct consultation and resolution for complex medical cases when necessary.
II. Administrative Duties
Oversee and coordinate physician and advanced practice provider (APP) staffing to ensure adequate coverage of the Emergency Department.
Work with the Director of Emergency Services (Nursing Director) and hospital leadership to improve operational efficiency, including patient flow, bed availability, and coordination with inpatient services.
Collaborate with hospital administration and the System Chief to manage the ED budget, including physician and APP staffing, operational expenses, and cost-saving initiatives.
Assist in recruitment, hiring, credentialing, and retention of ED physicians and APPs.
Conduct regular performance evaluations of ED physicians and APPs, providing feedback and facilitating professional development.
Work with the system chief to manage ED physician scheduling, ensuring efficiency and equity among providers.
Represent the Emergency Department in hospital committees and leadership meetings as required.
Develop and implement quality assurance and peer review programs within the ED.
III. Education and Training
Support continuing medical education for ED staff, including organizing training sessions, conferences, and in-service programs.
Serve as a mentor to physicians, APPs, and medical trainees rotating through the Emergency Department.
Coordinate and oversee emergency medicine resident or medical student education, if applicable.
IV. Quality and Compliance
Monitor adherence to hospital policies and regulatory requirements, including Joint Commission and CMS standards. (with Director of Emergency Services)
Co-lead efforts in reducing medical errors, adverse events, and hospital-acquired infections within the Emergency Department. (with Director of Emergency Services)
Oversee compliance with EMTALA regulations and ensure appropriate documentation and reporting. (with Director of Emergency Services)
Facilitate regular morbidity and mortality reviews, implementing necessary process improvements.
Participate in root cause analyses for sentinel events and develop action plans for quality improvement. (with Director of Emergency Services)
V. Liaison and Community Relations
As designated by the System Chief, serve as a liaison between the Emergency Department and hospital administration, medical staff, nursing, and ancillary departments.
In coordination with the EMS medical director, support collaborative relationships with pre-hospital emergency services, including EMS, paramedics, and first responders.
Engage with community stakeholders, including public health organizations and emergency preparedness agencies, to enhance emergency services and disaster preparedness.
Represent the Emergency Department in public relations efforts, as requested by the hospital and System Chief.
VI. Other Responsibilities
Serve as administrative attending on-call along with the System Chief and other medical directors and attendings, as designated by the System Chief. In this role, respond to administrative and clinical issues that arise on a 24/7 basis or ensure appropriate designee coverage.
Attend required leadership meetings, as designated by the System Chief, including quality and operational committees.
Engage in hospital-wide emergency preparedness planning and response initiatives.
Perform other duties as assigned by the System Chief of EM, Chief Medical Officer, or hospital leadership.
Reporting Structure
The Medical Director, Emergency Department, Holy Family Hospital shall report directly to the System Chief of Emergency Medicine for LGH and HFH and collaborate closely with the CMO, hospital administration, and department chiefs as needed. The Medical Director ED HFH has supervisory responsibilities of the Associate Medical Director, Haverhill Emergency Department, Holy Family Hospital. The Associate Medical Director, Haverhill Emergency Department, Holy Family Hospital has a dotted line reporting relationship to the System Chief of Emergency Medicine. The Medical Director ED HFH is a in a dyad collaborative leadership structure with the Director of Emergency Services for HFH.
This Exhibit shall be considered an integral part of the Physician’s employment contract and shall be subject to periodic review and modification as deemed necessary by the hospital and the Medical Director, Emergency Department, Holy Family Hospital Methuen.
