State of Massachusetts Librarian (A/B) in Massachusetts

  1. Performs original and copy cataloging of monographs, serials, and all other library materials in special formats according to RDA and Library of Congress (LC) standards using OCLC MARC format in order to provide access to library materials. Provides authority control for names, series, and subjects used in cataloging records in accordance with current library policy to provide proper access to library materials in the online catalog. Processes newly cataloged materials and edits bibliographic and item record information in the online catalog. 2. Responsible for uploading and creating, adding, and editing metadata for electronic documents in the State Library’s digital repository. 3. Responsible for maintaining holdings and all serial maintenance in the online catalog and digital repository. Collaborate with Government Documents Librarian to maintain completeness of Massachusetts state documents collection. 4. Assess and evaluate print library collections not available in electronic form and perform digitization of materials for addition to the library’s digital repository. 5. Responsible for enhancements to the library’s online catalog and serves as Aspen Discovery development coordinator for Technical Services in collaboration with the Reference Department. 6. Assists in collection development and management and library inventory projects. Share in stack and collection maintenance duties and library mail retrieval. 7. Assists in determining Technical Services Department policies in order to improve workflow and keep training and procedures manuals up to date. Maintains appropriate departmental statistical reports. 8. Maintains currency in the library profession and library technical services by attending and participating in meetings, seminars, and training sessions. Serves on assigned State Library Teams. 9. Participates in regular content creation for the library’s website, blog, email newsletter, and social media sites. 10. Performs other duties as assigned. 1. Knowledge of Library and Information Science and interest in metadata and cataloging. 2. Working knowledge of common equipment and software used in libraries and information centers. 3. Experience with integrated library systems and OCLC. 4. Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form. 5. Ability to work independently. 6. Ability to maintain harmonious working relations. 7. Knowledge of Microsoft Office 365, Adobe Creative Suite, and the ability to learn other software applications independently. 8. QUALIFICATIONS ACQUIRED ON THE JOB (list knowledges, skills and abilities) 1. Knowledge of DSpace, scanning and printing equipment, and other library technology. 2. Knowledge of cataloging and classification practices. 3. Detailed knowledge of State Library cataloging and authority control procedures. 4. Detailed knowledge of Massachusetts government structure and Massachusetts history. 5. Detailed knowledge of Massachusetts and federal government documents.
