State of Massachusetts Publications Coordinator in Malden, Massachusetts

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's (DESE) Office for Student Assessment Services (SAS) is responsible for coordinating the development, administration, and reporting of the Commonwealth’s statewide student assessment programs, including the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS). The Publications Coordinatorwill work in the Test Administration and Publications area of SAS and will be responsible for contributing to and ensuring the accuracy and quality of a variety of materials related to MCAS and other assessment programs, as well as providing editorial support for other SAS projects. The coordinator supervises the publications staff, monitorsthe work of the testing contractor, and oversees and participates in the timely and accurate production of multiple assessment products simultaneously. Job Responsibilities * Overseeand contribute to the timely copyediting and proofreading of a wide range of electronicand printmaterials related to assessment, ensuring that all materials are user-friendly, error-free, and adhere to established style guidelines. Materials include MCAS test questions, test forms, passages, manuals and instructions, tutorials, web pages, letters, technical reports, research papers, and other documents as assigned. * Supervise publications staff, including other editors (assign and monitor work, provide feedback, and evaluate performance) * Lead the development and maintenance of in-house style guides and procedural documents to ensure consistency and quality across the program * Oversee and assist in implementing quality control measures to ensure that test questions, test forms, and other publications are free of errors * Manageannual schedules for producing test materials and other documents * Monitor the performance of the testing contractor in developing and producing all test materials accurately and according to strict deadlines * Oversee and monitor the statuses of permissions for reprinting passages and graphics for MCAS English Language Arts tests * Organize and oversee the release of test questions and associated materials on the web, including postings of student work examples * Write high-quality, error-free original content as needed (web copy, letters, memoranda, presentations) * Identify ways to improve work processes and products, and recommend solutions to problems/issues as they arise * Collaborateand clearly communicatewith other SAS staff, and work closely withtest developers and editorsto review and edit test questions and passages * Promote equity and demonstrate mutual respect in all aspects of the work Preferred Qualifications The ideal candidate will have some, but not necessarily all, of the following skills and experiences: * Superior writing, editing, and proofreading skills, including a thorough knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation * Experience applying those skills to a wide range of digital and print products for various audiences * Proven ability to monitor schedules, work successfully under tight time constraints, set priorities, and adapt to changing circumstances * Experience developing, updating, and applying in-house style guides * Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style (17thedition) * Strong oral communication skills, and the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with a wide range of groups and people, including colleagues, agency leadership, vendors, and the public * 2 years of experience in a supervisory role, including supervising other editors * Experience writing, editing, and/or proofreading test questions and passages, or similar materials across multiple disciplines (English, mathematics, science, and civics) * Experience writing or editing materials in a K-12 educational or assessment organization * Knowledge of large-scale, statewide testing programs * Experience reviewing and editing technical documentation * Facility with MS Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), as well as Adobe Pro * Ability to quickly learn new processes, programs, and systems, as needed * Master’s degree in English, journalism, or a related field. This position is based in Malden. Staff are currently operating within a hybrid model, telecommuting up to three days per week. Based on assignment, travel throughout the Commonwealth may be required. Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have a Master’s Degree and at least five years of full-time or equivalent part-time, educational experience in a specific or related content area, educational program or service. Based on assignment, candidates must possess at least one year of supervisory, program coordination, or managerial experience. Substitutions: A Doctorate degree in a specific or related educational content area may be substituted for two years of the required non-supervisory experience. No substitutions will be permitted for the required supervisory, program coordination or managerial experience. Thirty (30) semester hours equals one year of experience for substitution purposes. Education toward a degree in a specific or related educational content area will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed. Special Requirements: Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's License or the equivalent from another state may be required.
