MIT Lincoln Laboratory, located in Lexington, Massachusetts, is a United States Department of Defense research and development center chartered to apply advanced technology to problems of national security. The Optical/Quantum Communication Technology Group develops impactful classical and quantum technologies and system prototypes for use in a wide range of challenging environments including terrestrial, space and underwater applications.
Primary areas of research include the development of novel entangled-photon source technologies; sensitive, single-photon receivers; multi-format modems; robust and compact optical beam directors; precision beam pointing, link acquisition and tracking systems; and novel modulation and coding approaches. The group is leveraging these technologies for use in prototype systems that are deployed in the field to inform next-generation classical and quantum optical system capabilities. The group is also working to enable new mission areas including extended-range and extended-utility undersea communications and entanglement-based quantum communication networks.
Job Description:
The Optical/Quantum Communication Technology Group is seeking a Graphic Artist which is highly motivated and proactive, working closely with multiple team members, supporting with presentations and visual communication.
Responsibilities:
The graphic artist will contribute to all aspects of the presentation and visual communication processes for the Group. These include:
Create and edit PowerPoint presentations for Group staff members
Create templates with appropriate markings for staff use based on previous examples
Coordinate the preparation and review of presentations with LL staff and graphics team
Ensure consistency within and across all presentations for a particular meeting
Design and develop concepts and illustrations for project posters
Coordinate and incorporate the proofing work done by our internal graphic design and quality control department
Use enterprise file sharing system to set up repositories for meeting documents; informing staff
Prepare PDFs and mockups for print books/coordinate the print job with our internal print production team
Make meeting announcement signs and posters of slides for tours
Load and test run presentations on conference room computer
Meeting room and tour area set up/enhancement (deploy posters & signs, computer equipment, phones, supplies)
Provide administrative and staffing support as needed during meetings
Proposed revisions to our work process
Requirements:
Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign) and Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, and Excel) required
Experience working with a range of software and design tools to create graphic output that can be incorporated into documents with stringent requirements
Knowledge and understanding of current graphic art production standards, practices, and terminology along with solid working knowledge of color theory, perspective, composition, and information design
Effective interpersonal and communication skills
Proven ability to work with subject matter experts (SMEs) to turn written, numerical, and existing content into compelling graphic representations
Ability to work under tight deadlines and changing customer demands in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
Effective time management and project management skills
Outstanding attention to detail, with excellent editing and proof-reading skills for both spelling and grammar
Ability to work independently, prioritize and track many tasks, and bring to closure is essential
Strong concept, design and layout skills
A portfolio sample of work is required at the time of interview
Desired:
Experience with Visio a strong plus, but not essential
Experience doing basic web design, e.g. wiki page development, is desired
Ability to help the staff in developing “laboratory presentations” to enhance tours
Some experience with general esthetics for work space signage and posters is a plus
