MIT Lincoln Laboratory Communications Strategist in Lexington, Massachusetts

This position serves as the internal communications strategist supporting the internal marketing and change management communications needs of the Director’s Office. This individual will be responsible for providing high-quality communications services, creating and executing on communication plans, and managing print and multi-media projects to support Business Transformation, Technology Ventures, and Diversity & Inclusion initiatives. Acting as a brand ambassador and creative communications agent, they will develop and produce immersive content for a variety of communication channels including print, presentations, digital displays, web, and video. This individual must be comfortable consulting with and coaching senior leaders and executives in helping them fulfill their role as change sponsor. They may also provide direct support and mentoring to frontline managers and supervisors as they help stakeholders through operational transitions. This individual will help project teams integrate change management communications into their project plans.

This role will act as liaison between the customer and production teams within Technical Communications, the Communications and Community Outreach Office, and the Information Services Department as needed to deliver effective, measurable communications. They will serve as project manager, leading diverse, cross-functional teams comprised of art directors, designers, developers, editors, multimedia specialists, and production staff.

This individual must demonstrate the ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of the Creative Projects Team within Technical Communications. Successful candidates will have advanced understanding of business and marketing communications writing, demonstrated flexibility in adapting to changing demands in a fast-paced production environment, and the willingness to gather an ongoing understanding of Laboratory history, mission areas, and evolving initiatives.

Job Description

Communications Strategy, Planning, and Execution

  • Facilitate the development and delivery of enterprise-wide communications campaigns for announcements, projects, or programs, either independently or in collaboration with creative team

  • Work with management to develop timelines, outline project deliverables, and allocate resources required to ensure projects are delivered on time and of the highest quality

  • Collaborate with service owners to assess if the correct approach is being taken, agree that the schedule of deliverables is achievable, and allocate resources and time to deliver quality services and products

  • Produce and incorporate multi-media, including video, illustration/graphics, and visualizations into content to create immersive storytelling experiences

  • Manage projects within Technical Communications and collaborate with the other sectors responsible for managing web services and external communication channels.

  • Provide quality control and assurance for all communication collateral produced

Change Management Communications Support

  • Create and implement communications plans that support change management and organizational development strategies that drive faster adoption, higher utilization, and greater proficiency of enterprise-wide initiatives to increase benefit realization, value creation, ROI, and the achievement of results and outcomes

  • Consult with and coach senior management on organizational transformation communications so they can more effectively lead, communicate, and make necessary decisions around enterprise-wide change initiatives

  • Improve change management effectiveness by influencing project teams from departments across the Lab in developing stakeholder/partner outreach and engagement efforts to obtain awareness, understanding, buy-in, and support

  • Focus on the people side of change, including various changes to processes, systems and technology, job roles, and organization structures

  • Provide value-added expertise in developing new concepts, techniques, and standards.

  • Conduct research and apply problem-solving skills to develop best fit solutions for significant enterprise communications challenges

  • Survey current methods of communication and identify the most appropriate channels to deliver targeted messaging that will yield best results

Day-to-Day Communication and Design Support

  • Manage the development and execution of communications materials, such as fact sheets, job aids, instructional guides, web content, and graphics for briefings and presentations

  • Work with management to prioritize conficting requests and reallocate resources where needed to meet project milestones and deadlines

  • Manage customer expectations and guide them towards the most effective design method and communication approach

Requirements

  • BFA/BA/BS in communications, graphic design, public relations, media arts and sciences, or related technical discipline

  • 3+ years of experience interacting with senior leadership to define vision and strategy and create supporting enterprise-wise communication plans

  • 5+ years project management and team leadership skills or equivalent experience

  • 5+ years working in an agency and/or technical environment in a customer-facing role

  • Solid understanding and application of communication and information design

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement communication plans that support change management strategies

  • Understanding of web design concepts and web-based communications strategies

  • Ability to handle several projects simultaneously

  • Ability to manage, edit, proofread, and cross-check technical and financial content with a high attention to detail

  • Demonstrated capabilities in presenting ideas written and orally

  • Solid project management and leadership skills

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a government security clearance

Desired

  • Experience in large organization change management initiatives or business transformation

  • Knowledge of organizational and cultural change management best practices and methodology or is willing to research, learn and apply a methodology for consistent implementation

  • Experience coordinating enterprise-wide initiatives, events, and communication/marketing efforts

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Graphic design aptitude and proficiency using Adobe Creative Suite and/or other design software

  • Familiarity with collaboration tools, asset management tools, and corresponding workflows
