Description: MassDEP seeks applicants for an Environmental Analyst III (EA-III) in support of MassDEP’s ambient air monitoring network, including particulate matter (PM) monitoring, meteorology (MET) monitoring, and special studies. Under the supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor, or his/her designee, the EA-III will conduct field and laboratory activities in support of the PM and MET projects. Specific duties for this position include, but are not limited to, the following: * Complete field and laboratory tasks in support of a particulate matter (PM) air monitoring project, including sample collection, gravimetric laboratory operations, data collection and analysis, quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC), and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. Provide detailed project updates as requested and notify supervisor of project delays or problems. * Drive to MassDEP air monitoring stations to prepare, deploy, clean, repair and/or maintain air sampling equipment for collection of particulates (PM10) and fine particulates (PM2.5) Teflon filter samples. * Prepare, receive, and complete gravimetric analysis of Teflon filters to determine the mass concentration of ambient air PM2.5 and PM10 samples collected in MassDEP’s air monitoring network and other locations. * Review field activities to ensure that all QA/QC tasks, maintenance tasks, and field repairs are performed in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) in a timely manner. Investigate any anomalies and provide guidance as needed. * Conduct routine QA activities to maintain a climate controlled gravimetric weighing laboratory, such as equipment checks, calibration of sensors, certification of standards, air filter replacement, and ordinary cleaning. * Support AAB’s meteorological (MET) program by preparing and tracking a certification schedule to ensure MET sensors are certified by prescribed deadlines, perform routine maintenance and repair of MET sensors, troubleshoot malfunctions and coordinate vendor repairs as necessary, receive, inspect, and test new MET sensors prior to field deployment, coordinate annual MET sensor replacements. * Drive to MassDEP air monitoring stations to perform annual swaps of MET sensors, troubleshoot malfunctions, conduct repairs, and/or complete QA activities. Track status and performance of sensors to ensure each is replaced annually and each is functioning properly. * Maintain and optimize the MET monitoring network by coordinating software updates, exploring vendor improvements, implementing process changes, soliciting user feedback, improving user experiences, and assisting and training users. * Create and maintain SOPs for equipment management and operation. * Support other air monitoring projects as needed, such as Photochemical Assessment Monitoring Stations (PAMS) monitoring, National Air Toxics Trends Station (NATTS) monitoring, and special studies. * Maintain compliance with all EPA requirements by responding to EPA requests, attending webinars or conferences, and implementing EPA program updates or technical guidance revisions. * Participate in the general maintenance of AAB air monitoring stations throughout the network, to ensure continued operation including infrastructure repairs such as roof leaks, detached doors, damaged fencing, or other components in need of repair. * Collect and install biological air monitoring samples at several fixed locations in and around the Boston area for delivery to the Department of Public Health laboratory in Jamaica Plain. * Perform other duties as assigned. Preferred Qualifications: * Ability to understand and apply laws, rules and regulations concerning the environment, in particular those dealing with ambient air quality and ambient air monitoring. * Excellent communication skills and experience collaborating with cross functional teams. * Experience operating and maintaining environmental analytical equipment. * Knowledge of the techniques used for collecting, handling, and transporting environmental samples. * Knowledge of and experience with QA/QC and safety procedures. * Ability to process environmental data according to EPA validation criteria. * Ability to adjust to changing situations and to meet emergency or changing program requirements. * Excellent computer skills, including a working knowledge and experience with Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and database acquisition software. * Proven ability to meet deadlines and prioritize multiple responsibilities. * Ability to express ideas clearly orally and in the written form. * Ability to use hand tools, climb ladders, work on roof tops, move equipment and compressed gas cylinders and other equipment up to 50 lbs. in weight. * Possession of a valid driver’s license. This position is full-time and is assigned to the Air Assessment Branch (AAB) located at MassDEP’s Wall Experiment Station, 37 Shattuck Street, Lawrence MA. The workplace is a hybrid work model that combines working in the field, office, and remotely. First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days. * *MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: * Applicants must have at least (A) four years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in the field of environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental health, meteorology, natural science, toxicology or public health, of which (B) at least two years must have been in a professional capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. *Substitutions: * I. An Associate's degree with a major in the field of environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental health, meteorology,. natural science, toxicology or public health may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience. II. A Bachelor's degree with a major in the field of environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental health, meteorology, natural science, toxicology or public health may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience.* III. A Graduate degree with a major in the field of environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental health, meteorology, natural science, toxicology or public health may be substituted for a maximum of three years of the required (A) experience and one year of the required (B) experience.* Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
