Staples Director of Site Merchandising in Framingham, Massachusetts

Position Summary:

The Director, Site Merchandising is responsible for driving the strategy, roadmap, tactics and execution of associated web sales for Staples.com and StaplesAdvantage.com. This role will be responsible for developing a roadmap to drive higher sales contribution from demand shaping and associated sales tools, increasing from todays 10-20% of web sales to the 30-40% range ($800M to $1.6B). In addition, this role will be responsible for consolidated efforts currently held across multiple teams across the organization into a single workstream. The Director of Site Merchandising will work cross-functionally with sell-side merchandising and SDS to drive increased utilization and optimization of the current tool and will be responsible for identifying improvement & optimization opportunities. The Director of Site Merchandising will do this by leveraging a strong understanding of eCommerce, Merchandising and Analytics; a keen ability to influence decision making at all levels; and a strong drive to deliver continuous testing and design. This position requires a seasoned leader that thrives in a high-energy, fast-paced, dynamic environment and the ability to create and instill a high-performance culture of ownership and accountability.

Responsibilities:

  • Define and drive the Site Merchandising strategy and roadmap for associated web sales & demand shaping, identifying optimization opportunities and ensuring full utilization of existing tools to drive an additional 10-20% annual sales growth ($800M to $1.6B)

  • Lead process improvement workflow to consolidate current state operations into a single workstream with a clear business owner and strategy

  • Partner with Analytics to tag and measure impact of current tools

  • Responsible for developing & executing strategy to significantly increase utilization of tools, with both systemic designs and thoughtful utilization of manual merchandising

  • Actively participate in Business Reviews, communicating on key initiative performance to senior leadership, providing insights and recommendations to continually drive the business

  • Identify gaps & improvement opportunities that require SDS support, develop business case and drive requirements

  • Drive a culture of collaboration, sharing of best practices, and influencing decision making at all levels

  • Hold cross functional partners accountable for defining and measuring against key performance indicators to track performance/success.

  • Ability to be the voice of the business, effectively and clearly communicating financial results and other KPI’s to all levels within the organization

  • Drive process improvement and consolidation into single streamlined function with clear ownership & strategy

  • Develop utilization and optimization strategy of tools, including by customer or category depending on zone

  • Develop robust testing plan over time

  • Identify gaps in current tool set and innovative improvements and build business case for SDS prioritization

  • Lead internal cross-functional partnerships, including SDS and Sell-Side Merchandising

  • Manager external vendor relationships (Ex. Adobe, SiteSpec, etc.)

  • Responsible for driving full utilization of current tools; the optimization of the current process; and the near-term roadmap to drive an incremental 10-20% of associated web sales

  • Long term, this position will be an integral part of designing the processes and strategies required to make this a standard operating function that becomes part of our web-sales DNA

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a team

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • BA/BS in Marketing, Management, Business, or other related field.

  • Master’s degree or MBA preferred.

  • 8+ years of eCommerce, Merchandising and/or Project management experience.

  • Strong interpersonal and presentation skills as well as demonstrated experience in fact-based analysis, including the ability to persuasively present insights and recommendations to senior management.

  • Pro-active and self-motivated work style with proven ability to collaborate broadly with flexible, positive attitude to get results within a cross-functional team.

  • Understanding of merchandising sales and margin objectives.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and changing priorities with demonstrated track record of strong execution and experience partnering with technical teams to deliver results.

  • Strong strategic, analytical and critical thinking skills; strong bias towards data-based decision making with the ability to break down complex problems and formulate plans.

  • Strategic thinking combined with ‘on your feet’ problem solving ability.

  • Ability to build relationships with business partners and proactively assess needs of the business
