Staples Creative Director in Framingham, Massachusetts


Position Summary:

The Creative Director is a key role within the newly formed Staples Creative Agency, responsible for lifting the brand and dramatically improving the communications effectiveness of Staples’ customer-facing communications with a heavy mix of digital, direct response and brand-building vehicles. The CD will play a key role in managing a team of creative professionals including art directors, designers and copywriters. This role requires hands-on delivery while lifting the creative standards and the efficiency of creative output.

The CD will report to the Chief Creative Officer and will work closely with the marketing teams to guarantee that the Staples brand purpose (“Helping the world work better”) is infused into every form of communication with strong calls to action. The CD is also tightly aligned to the merchandising, b2b and retail teams to ensure that he/she is knowledgeable about the range of Staples products and services available now and in the future. This includes staying on top of trends while evolving Staples’ voice and visual identity to be seen as a leader in key areas. Similarly, the CD will work closely with the and user experience (UX) and technology groups to ensure that the ecommerce experience and platforms deliver on the brand’s promise and generate significant business growth through more relevant and engaging communications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage a portfolio of communications assignments that differentiate the Staples brand and create higher levels of engagement, response and commerce

  • Oversee and manage in-house and external creative resources

  • Work closely with marketing on brand and marketing programs

  • Oversee key campaigns (e.g., Back-to-School, Holiday, Tax Season) to drive significant demand (site and store traffic and funnel filling for the b2b sales team), working with both in-house and external agency partners

  • Utilize data and insights to drive clear and succinct creative briefs with the best chance of driving customer behavior change increasing the active customer base and their value

  • Collaborate with the content and social team and external partners to develop long- and short-form stories/case studies (video and text based) and demonstrations of Staples’ expertise in helping our customer’s worlds work better leveraging Staples’ strengths in office products, break room, facilities, tech, print and marketing services and promo services

  • Support the sales force through the design and development of best-in-class sales enablement digital tools that enable them to facilitiate consultative selling 1:1 experiences

  • Develop new forms of creative storytelling utilizing emerging technologies (e.g., virtual reality, 360 videos)

  • Collaborate closely with UX and technology teams to deliver a best-in-class ecommerce experience (both desktop and mobile)

  • Collaborate with the marketing operations team to improve workflow and ensure work is produced on time, on budget, and with utmost efficiency

  • Ensure creative integrity and excellence in every asset produced

  • Work cross-functionally with other leaders in the organization to increase the level of creativity in Staples’ customer facing communications and to create energy/excitement for Staples’ as a world-class brand storytelling organization



  • 10+ years of relevant professional experience working with Fortune 100 organization —both consumer and B2B – on the agency and client-side

  • Direct response and/or digital awards from creative that moves the revenue needle

  • BFA in Graphic/Communication Design

  • Expertise in Adobe CS and other applications for digital and print production

  • Extensive photography/video direction experience

  • Ability to effectively present and sell through creative to executive level audiences

  • Strong communication, writing, and collaboration skills

  • Experience leading creative work across a range of media channels

  • Impeccable design, typography and art direction skills

  • Strong project management, and leadership skills

  • Skilled in user interface design, user experience, information architecture and usability for ecommerce.

  • Holistic & strategic thinker who can keep their eye on the big picture even when focused on details
