Position Summary:

The Associate Category Merchant is responsible for managing the Dated Goods and Desk Accessories categories for the Staples Delivery Businesses. This role owns the Financial P&L and execution of the category strategy for both departments. The ACM will drive sales and margin through assortment planning, product and vendor selection, vendor relationships and negotiation, financial planning, managing inventory impact implications, partnering with the sales force, and driving a positive customer experience on both sites. With guidance from Director/DMM the ACM will develop the category strategy to drive growth and competitive differentiation while best serving our customer.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop deep understanding of customer needs aswell as upcoming trends and brands in the marketplace.

  • With support from DMM, develop and executestrategy to drive categories utilizing vendor and industry share information.

  • Responsible forselecting items and vendors and presenting to DMM for approval. With managerapproval negotiate with vendors for lower total delivered cost, volumeincentives, rebates, advertising and other applicable allowances. Meet withvendors in development of marketing plans.

  • Merchandise assignedline(s) to ensure service levels with minimum inventory investment and maximumgross margin. Effectively manage impact on total supply chain by leveragingknowledge of inventory turns and logistics.

  • Review and approvefinancial and item forecasts with Planners. Responsible for all financials ofthe category and must be able to present understanding of the numbers to uppermanagement.

  • Partner with theStaples Brand Group to drive innovation, design and solutions for our customersin both categories. Develop and drive differentiated and exclusive productsthat are on trend.

  • Work with Marketing,Inventory Management, Sales Force, Staples Digital Services and otherfunctional areas as needed to achieve corporate goals.

  • Develop ability toutilize appropriate resources to gather data.

  • Ability to manage aProduct Specialist through the training and development of merchant skill setswhile holding the PS accountable for execution and delivery of their jobresponsibilities

  • Interpret financialstatements, total costs to NPD data, financials levers and metrics used inMerchandising to understand current and future trends. Identifyexceptions and seek additional informationwhen data discrepancies are found.

Qualifications

Basic:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required

  • Minimum 3-5 years prior work experience in Merchandising or Inventory and Planning preferred

  • Financial / Analytical experience required

  • Superior organizational and communication skills

  • Ability to work independently

  • Must be results driven, passionate and accountable

  • Previous manager experience preferred

  • In depth knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Power Point required
