River Valley Co-op Category Manager in Florence, Massachusetts

FLORENCE Full-time. Requires open availability, including evenings and weekends. Works closely with Marketing Department and Department Managers Pay Level: IX, exempt. Location: Administrative Office, Florence, MA Purpose: The Category Manager provides strategic leadership in multiple locations by effectively partnering with Center Store department buyers and managers, and key members of the leadership team to create and implement comprehensive purchasing, pricing, merchandising, and promotional programs that support the co-ops overall brand, mission, and goals. Specifically, the Category Manager is responsible for strategic leadership to achieve goals for price image and profit margins. The Category Manager nurtures vendor relationships into partnerships with a high level of mutual organizational trust and maximizes River Valley Co-ops competitive advantage while amplifying its cooperative and local community identity. Three aspects of the job are key: Profit, Vendor Relations, and Brand Identity. The Category Manager conducts regular category reviews, ensuring the category is a profitable balance of market trends, customer needs, and River Valley Co-ops brand requirements. The Category Manager creates and maintains vendor relationships with integrity and a win-win outcome, with specific care for local and cooperative suppliers. Desired Qualities: The Category Manager is a Data Maven, who is energized by mining data from a myriad of sources (sales analysis, industry trends, consumer trends, and customer feedback) and transforming it into sales floor sets. They understand the high value of insight from staff partners on the sales floor and lead the buying team with inclusivity and flexibility. They are deeply committed to the concept of service and to working for positive social change by excelling as a cooperative grocery business meeting our customers needs and our triple bottom line goals. Essential Qualifications Minimum 4 years experience in product or category management. 3+ years of management-level experience. College degree in marketing, business, retail merchandising, or equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge and skills. Significant experience in sales, marketing, and purchasing. Excellent product knowledge and ability to identify current and upcoming trends. Knowledge and/or experience in the natural foods industry and/or cooperative businesses. Demonstrated understanding of data analysis and forecasting methods. Ability to understand and create reports from sales data, showing financial and mathematical analysis that will enhance business making decisions. Demonstrated superior oral and written communication ability and able to work with diverse populations. Excellent organizational, planning, time management, and problem-solving skills. Excellent attention to detail and ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Ability to prioritize projects and tasks to meet the needs of the Co-op. Ability to work productively and independently. Proven experience handling and maintaining sensitive and confidential information. Proven ability to set and achieve department and organizational goals. Desire to determine, foster, and develop the best qualities and contributions of department personnel. Point of Sale System knowledge. Ability to work as a collaborative team player. Ability to be flexible and to adapt to changing conditions quickly. Ability to use computers and applicable software and programs, specifically Microsoft Office and Google Suite. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
