Job Description

The R&D Manager is critical to delivering the growth of the Fastener Solutions businesses by driving execution of short and mid term development projects, working cross-functionally to align on the long range strategy, and delivering on product re-engineering projects to maintain an industry leadership position. The role will collaborate with engineering, marketing, manufacturing, global technical teams, suppliers, customers, and end users. Results are delivered by having a broad base of technical process and product development experiences; creativity; lean principle and problem solving skills; statistical data analysis skills; and the ability to collaborate and influence across boundaries.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Provide R&D project management and technical leadership through ideation, proof of principle, and validation of results and trials in preparation for New Product Development transition

  • Lead the development of projects. Provide direction and mentorship to R&D team. Monitor team’s progress on schedule, budget, and technical output. Provide oversight of complex and sometimes global projects.

  • Exploration of new technologies to integrate into strengths.

  • Strategy Development - Work closely with Marketing and Product Management as a thought partner to outline the strategy for the business, and create product roadmaps aligned to meet the strategy

  • Lead technology transfer to manufacturing and support implementation on an as needed basis. Key technical resource for Manufacturing.

  • Prioritize and allocate resource needs to align with the business needs in both the short and long term, achieving a balance between product growth, productivity, business continuity and quality initiatives. Ensure project execution to achieve performance targets while meeting timing and budget constraints.

  • Organization Development - Develop team to deliver on the business goals, and develop and mentor future leaders through knowledge sharing and mentoring in areas including product development, project management, and data analysis.

  • Intellectual Property Management - Conduct patent analysis and lead patent submissions for projects. Must have effective follow through with stakeholders and Legal.

  • Perform general management duties, exercising usual authority concerning staff, performance appraisals, promotions and terminations. Ensuring safe and consistent work practices among the team.

  • Leverage internal/external authorities in network to accomplish goals.

  • Act as a team role model, particularly around Avery Dennison’s Leadership Principles.

  • Challenge traditional methods (we always do it that way)

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Materials Science or related degree required. Advanced degree preferred.

  • 10+ years industry experience.

  • Strong materials knowledge, particularly polymer based

  • Diverse background in product development, automation, and manufacturing processes

  • Experience with leading and developing internal and external resources

  • Validated commercial, technical and successes from your work.

  • Confirmed intellectual property - patent portfolio

  • Project leadership experience required.

  • Strong scientific and engineering knowledge.

  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.

  • Lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, ELS or related experience preferred.

  • Strong written and oral interpersonal skills.

  • Strong organization and attention to detail.

  • Solid modeling proficiency (Preferably SolidWorks)

  • Proficient in spreadsheet, word processing and presentation software (Google based)
