General Scope and Summary

SAGE Therapeutics is searching for a creative, resourceful, integrative thinker for an important role supporting our Alliance management function.

Roles and Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

Sage Therapeutics is seeking an Associate Director to support our Sr. Director, Alliance Management with particular focus on our Biogen partnered early-stage and clinical-stage programs

  • In partnership with the Sr. Director, Alliance Management, Program Team Lead(s), and Program Manager(s), manage overall Alliance with external partner and cross-functionally within Sage

  • Interact with internal functional team members to ensure cross-functional needs / processes of assigned partnerships are well supported and any identified gaps are filled

  • Support annual strategic planning and ongoing collaboration budgets in partnership with Joint Committees (JXCs)while proactively identifying key risks and mitigations

  • Build strong working relationships with Alliance Management counterparts at assigned partner organizations and facilitate overarching positive relationship

  • Facilitate Alliance governance including: schedule, manage and coordinate Alliance meetings including but not limited to, Joint Steering Committee (JSC), Joint Development Committee (JDC), Joint Commercialization Committee (JCC) and applicable sub-teams. Includes the preparation, review and finalization of meeting agendas, materials and minutes

  • Manage partner-specific information requests and issues raised, by resolving or escalating appropriately

  • Build Alliance management capabilities at Sage, clarify roles and responsibilities among various stakeholders, establish best practices, and conduct external benchmarking efforts

  • Proactively track, monitor, and communicate both internally and externally the contractual obligations and deliverables of both parties, to ensure responsibilities are met in accordance with the terms of collaboration and that the spirit of the collaboration is being met

  • Coordinate, track, and organize Alliance-related documents, processes, and enable distribution as appropriate to internal team members and Alliance partners

  • Proactively obtain stakeholder feedback on the effectiveness of the collaboration. Support partnership health survey deployments, analysis, and presentation of results. Help to identify, facilitate, and drive changes where necessary and appropriate to maintain an effective collaboration

  • Coach internal functional team members assigned to specific alliances on how to effectively execute partnerships despite key cultural, philosophical, internal processes, and organizational operating models differences and ensure plans to overcome these are in place

Experience, Education and Specialized Knowledge and Skills

Must thrive working in a fast-paced, innovative environment while remaining flexible, proactive, resourceful and efficient. Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to develop important relationships with key stakeholders, ability to identify issues and raise to key stakeholders in order to develop relevant and realistic plans, programs and recommendations. An ideal candidate would lead through influence, manage relationships by facilitating dialog and by clearly communicating Sage’s positions with respect to the partnership.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred, preferably in life sciences, business development, or another related field

  • 6+ years of Alliance management experience in the pharmaceutical or biotech industry required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge and interpretation of contractual language. Experience working on and understanding contractual agreements that govern Alliances and/or formal documents

  • Comfort in discussing medical topics

  • Familiarity with project planning tools including GANTT charts

  • Experience running a Joint Steering Committee and/or Joint Research Committee

  • Excel at communicating with senior pharmaceutical and biotech executives

  • Direct experience preferred in managing an R&D Alliance or collaborative R&D programs

  • Experience working with all levels of management and consulting with key business stakeholders. An ability to influence for greater outcomes.

  • Strong team player that has a customer service approach and is solution oriented.

  • Attention to detail and the ability to work individually, within a multi-disciplinary team, as well as with external partners and vendors.

  • Possesses strong written and verbal communication skills.
