Emergo by UL’s Human Factors Research & Design (HFR&D) team is a global Human Factors Engineering (HFE) consultancy with offices in Concord, MA; Chicago, IL; Utrecht, The Netherlands; Cambridge, United Kingdom; and Tokyo, Japan. Emergo by UL's HFR&D staff consists of nearly 70 human factors research and design professionals with degrees in disciplines such as human factors, engineering, psychology, and design. Note that Emergo by UL is the advisory services (consulting) division of UL (formerly Underwriters Laboratories), which has been a product safety innovator and leader since its founding in 1894.
What you’ll learn & achieve:
Emergo by UL’s HFR&D team is an industry leader in providing user research, user interface design, usability testing and other human factors consulting services to its clients. Many of the world’s leading medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturers rely upon our services to produce safe and satisfying products and get them launched. Our work involves the research, design, and evaluation of the user interfaces of medical devices, pharmaceutical devices, diagnostics and laboratory instruments. Our research and design portfolio include products and systems such as robotic surgery systems, imaging devices, autoinjectors, inhalers, ventilators, mobile medical apps, laboratory instruments and in vitro diagnostic devices. Our portfolio of work also includes non-medical products such as consumer products, automotive diagnostic tools, and software applications.
We are looking for an eloquent, persuasive writer to join our team.
This individual’s primary responsibilities will include gathering project information from technical team members; writing business proposals according to the company's guidelines, exemplars, and policies; and delivering the proposal to the appropriate team member (e.g., sales specialist, technical team member).
To be successful as a technical writer, you should be articulate, have excellent written communication skills, and be motivated and able to work to meet deadlines. You should be consistent, responsive, and detail-oriented, and able to write in a factual, compelling, and convincing manner. You will be asked to support the team by doing the following:
Prepare short and long-form business proposals based on input from (1) subject matter experts (i.e., consultants) and sales personnel, and (2) using the consulting team’s proposal content management system
Accept feedback on draft written materials and revise effectively in accordance with the feedback
Ensure proposals are clear, compelling, and consistent with team standards and procedures
Use graphics, tables, and other information formats to complement written material
Integrate pricing information (provided by technical team members) into proposals
Update the proposal content management system
Mentor technical staff members on effective writing
What makes you a great fit:
Associate’s or Bachelor's Degree, or equivalent, in technical writing, communications, journalism, English, or a related field
Ability to write content efficiently and in an engaging, persuasive, professional, and credible manner
Professional level, fluent English (reading, writing, speaking)
Eagerness to learn and write in general accordance with the consulting team’s preferred style (e.g., active voice, concise)
Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with people of different backgrounds and working styles
Excellent computer and organizational skills, as well as superb attention to detail
Strong proficiency using MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint
Prior experience as a grant writer and prior work with design and/or engineering professionals are a plus.
