IBM Writer - IBM Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts
We are seeking a writer to join our team of researchers, designers, and creators crafting how the world experiences IBM Research.
The writer bridges the gap between science and story. Your writing will span every facet of the IBM Research footprint, including web content, video scripts, social media material, print, presentations, event collateral and more. You will work closely with internal stakeholders and external partners to communicate the amazing work of our research staff members and leadership to the broader technical community.

You know how to identify research that will make an impact on the world, and you can communicate it in a way that drives excitement and engagement with a technical audience on any platform. You are a storyteller - regardless of the medium and have a passion for science and technology.
Your Role and Responsibilities
You'll be a part of the IBM Research Design organization. Our goal is to create a quality, differentiated, end-to-end IBM Research experience across the web, at our labs, and in person. The team crafts every experience and encounter, internally and externally, and our work crosses nearly every category of output: research and strategy, communications, content development, and design systems, web and digital experiences, tools and training, and physical spaces.
Many of these experiences are centered around written content. This is your domain. Your work will include translating complex technical and scientific concepts into engaging storytelling. You will develop scripts for videos, draft invitations for events, and write copy for brand assets and the IBM Research website.
We're seeking a creator with experience writing about science or technology. You must have a passion and demonstrated experience delivering projects with real impact. You possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and an open ear. You will develop a keen understanding of the work happening both inside of IBM Research and across the competitive landscapes of hybrid cloud, AI, quantum computing, and scientific research. You work well with a wide range of scientific, technical, business development, marketing and communications professionals.

Develop and maintain a strategic awareness of the competitive landscape and conversations in our research focus areas: hybrid cloud, AI, quantum, and science.
Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure the information we develop is consistent, accurate, high-quality, and engaging.
Ensure all content conveys IBM Research's key messages to a technical audiences in a consistent and compelling manner.
Incorporate feedback from editors, leadership and subject matter experts.
Ensure published materials are of the highest quality.
Provide guidance and support to marketing, communications, business development, and researchers.
Required Technical and Professional Expertise
Demonstrated expertise in technical storytelling in multiple forms; we will request to review your portfolio of written material and other digital and/or multimedia content.
Previous experience writing:
Narrative-driven stories and blog posts
YouTube descriptions and social media copy
Event content including narratives, invitations, save-the-dates, landing pages, agendas, and talking points
Copy for brand storytelling vehicles such as posters, postcards, brochures, and presentations
A proven ability to work with highly technical information and deliver with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
Strong project management skills, with a commitment to be highly organized and determination to meet deadlines.
Expertise building and maintaining relationships, including relationships with individuals from other disciplines and business units, as well as senior leadership.
Experience with design and layout of web-based written communications, including the use of content management systems is a plus.
This role may involve occasional travel to IBM Research sites.
Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise
3 years in an equivalent role or freelance experience.
BA/BS or higher degree in journalism, marketing or relevant scientific or communications discipline
