Senior Director, Licensing Officer
The Senior Director, Licensing Officer (LO) reports to the Head of Business Development & Licensing Oncology and Radiology. This role is responsible for identifying, shaping and executing the best possible transactions that are aligned with Bayer Pharmaceuticals' strategy. In this capacity you will interact with both internal stakeholders and external contacts from the life sciences industry ecosystem, for exploration of potential opportunities.
The role is responsible for identifying and leading a diverse range of global and regional transactions for licensing, acquisition, or strategic collaborations primarily focused in Oncology. You may sometimes singularly lead transactions end-to-end including their alliance management. For other transactions you may partner with a scientific licensing colleague contributing your expertise on negotiations, contracting, financial and commercial acumen. In addition, you will lead the negotiations as a direct counterpart to the potential partner’s negotiation lead (e.g., Business Development Lead).
The LO will be responsible for presenting assessments of individual partnering opportunities as well as related broader strategies to the leadership teams as well as senior governance committees, for seeking approval to advance to term sheet stage, due diligence, and contracting stage. The LO may, if required, also manage selected alliances.
YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Key Responsibilities:
The primary responsibilities of this role, Senior Director, Licensing Officer (LO) are to:
Leads the development of strategies as related to business development for Oncology and potentially Radiology;
Leadsthe transactional elements of business development projects including business case evaluation, terms and contract shaping and negotiations, executionandtransition to alliance management;
Leads the Integrated Deal Team (IDT), a cross-functional team in a matrix organization, for later stage and commercial assets and partners with Scientific Licensing colleague (SLO) if required contributing his/her strong negotiation/business expertise;
Manages internal evaluation of opportunities includingtechnicaland commercial assessment, due diligence, valuation and management reviews, working closely with BU (Business Unit) leadership and business development leadership and licensingcolleagues;
Provides knowledge and expertise to company evaluations and review analyses and presents identified opportunities to executive-level management;
Thinks creatively about deal structures and solutions and acts as a champion of deals internally;
Participates in and leads negotiations with target company senior level to shape and move discussions forward;
Contributes effectively to screening of opportunities to help identify the right assets and companies and has the interest and ability to run the evaluation if required;
Works with key stakeholders and cross-functional teams to drive and ensure effective communication, efficient decision-making, and completion of opportunity assessments and transactions in a timely manner;
Supports creation and execution of integration plans consistent with business strategy, timelines, and financial targets;
Manages if required one or more alliance(s) with external partners according to highest standards and best possible benefit for Bayer;
Networks and maintains relationships with a broad spectrum of external parties to optimize the overall enablement of business development transactions to support the overall strategies and needs of Bayer;
Represents Bayer as a spokesperson in external partnering and actively participate in external networking to generate potential opportunities for Bayer;
Executes Bayer’s ecosystem engagement/Open Innovation strategy in EU/US through interactions with key ecosystem players;
Work closely with regional commercial teams particularly in US (United States) and EU (European Union) to identify regional opportunities.
WHO YOU ARE
Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:
Required Qualifications:
A University degree (Master or comparable) in a Life Science or related discipline or a degree in Business, Law, Finance or related field;
Strong contractual and negotiation experience with diverse deal types and partners and a demonstrated deal sheet (please attach);
Strong knowledge of the pharmaceutical and biotech industry, R&D (Research & Development) process and critical understanding of commercial assessment and financial valuation;
Must have fair depth in the science and business of Oncology drug development and landscape to be able to lead search and evaluation activities as needed;
Experience in the development of business strategies;
Strong business acumen and ability to drive well-informed, fact- based decision making including overall business assessment of marketed and development stage opportunities;
Excellent analytical skills, learns fast, grasps the "essence" and can change the course quickly where indicated;
Excellent communication skills (written, oral and presentation) are critical to clearly communicate business strategies and capabilities internally and externally, present individual and team scientific and medical assessments and recommendations and foster cross functional consensus-building;
Must possess ability to develop relationships, influence across all levels and inspire confidence and trust from internal and external partners at all levels and cultures;
Ability to drive projects to deliver timely results and follow through on internal and external commitments;
Experience in leadership without formal authority and/or management of cross-functional teams;
Willingness to travel up to 40 % of the time.
Preferred Qualifications:
PhD Degree;
MBA Degree,
15+ years of relevant industry experience;
A minimum of 7 years of experience within Business Development, or related experience within Banking, Equity research, Venture Capital.
