Scientific Illustrator


Location: Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States


The Illustrator is responsible for the illustrative print and online content appearing in the front section of Cell, covers of Trends and sister journals, review of outsourced illustration and design work, and special commercial products. This role supports the flagship journal as well as the full portfolio of new and existing Cell Press journals in the life and physical sciences.

This role is also responsible for managing journal deadlines and schedules as well as dealing with illustration issues/problems and special journal issues for all Cell Press journals.


  • Conceptualize and create illustrations from authors’ rough sketches or electronic files.

  • Create ideas for illustrations where the author of an article has not provided suggestions.

  • Produce issue SnapShots and other special Cell content.

  • Assist with management of freelance illustration model.

  • Perform quality control on freelanced art and design work.

  • Research and license photographic images where appropriate.

  • Liaise with journal editors, authors, and suppliers.

  • Attend outside seminars and lecture on industry trends.

  • Stay tuned to web and design innovations on competing journals.

  • Think creatively about new ideas and features.


  • Excellent drawing, typography, layout, and design abilities

  • Strong visualization skills to transform complex information into 2- or 3D images

  • The ability to work to fixed deadlines

  • An eye for detail

  • The ability to independently manage projects

  • The ability to adapt illustration style and to ensure brand consistency

  • Knowledge of printing processes a plus

  • Strong organizational skills with correspondingly strong follow-up ability

  • Strong communication skills, verbal & written

  • Ability to handle a multitude of tasks

  • Sets priorities

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in fine arts, visual art, graphic design and illustration, or related field preferred

  • High proficiency in digital illustration software Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop

  • Familiarity with Adobe inDesign

  • Abilities in other relevant creative software a plus
