Ability to serve as both a “thinker” and a “doer” with equally strong strategic thinking, as well as writing and implementation skills.
Demonstrated success facilitating peer review, handling complex issues, monitoring and reporting on journal performance metrics, and managing volunteers and outside editorial coordinators.
Additional Information:The Harvard Data Science Review (HDSR), a flagship publication of Harvard Data Science Initiative (HDSI), features foundational thinking, research milestones, educational innovations, and major applications in data science. Launching in July, 2019, it aims to publish content that help to define and shape data science as a scientifically rigorous and globally impactful multidisciplinary field. By uniting the strengths of a premier research journal, a cutting-edge educational publication, and a popular magazine, HDSR will provide a crossroads at which fundamental data science research and education intersect directly with societally important applications from industry, governments, NGOs, and others. It will also leverage digital technologies and advances to emphasize multimedia dissemination, learning-oriented visualization, enhanced author-reader interactions, and a global presence. To ensure quality and efficient peer review system, submissions are by invitation only, after a screening process.
This is a two-year term appointment, with possibility of renewal.Department:Data Science InitiativePre-Employment Screening:Identity Schedule:Full Time - Mon - Fri.Job Function:Communications Duties & Responsibilities:The Managing Director will oversee all business and program operations of the HDSR. These include, but are not limited to, ensuring the smooth production of both digital and print versions of HDSR; managing skillfully a small editorial team and various HDSR programs such as workshops and writing competitions; working effectively with the Publisher, vendors, sponsors and other HDSR partners (e.g., professional societies), and serving as the key business partner of the Editor-in-Chief in establishing a business model to sustain HDSR’s on-going innovation and outreach effort.
Duties & Responsibilities
Reporting to the Editor-in-chief (EIC) of HDSR and the Executive Director (ED) of HDSI, the Managing Director (MD) coordinates and oversees all of the Journal’s production and business operations. Specifically, the MD is responsible for establishing, maintaining, and/or enhancing:
A user-friendly submission system for both proposal and article submissions;
An efficient system for documenting, communicating, and tracking review of the submissions;
A robust and quality production process from copyediting to digital and print publications, including all aspects of data visualization and any other non-text based materials;
A friendly, timely, and accurate communication channel with all stakeholders (e.g., authors, editors, reviewers, readers, sponsors, university leadership);
A sustainable business model for ensuring the highest quality of production and for supporting innovation and on-going outreach efforts.
The MD is responsible for all business operations of HDSR, including budget planning, business development, vendor selection, timely delivery, and quality assurance. The MD manages a small and growing team of editorial staff, as well as the relationship with the HDSR’s publisher, and with outside graphic designers, and other vendors, including handling ethics issues. The MD collaborates with the EIC to identify articles that should be accompanied by a visualization and works with design and visualization professionals to produce visualizations. The MD collaborates with authors, editors, and designers on the development of each visualization.
The MD organizes and staffs meetings of the Editorial and Advisory Boards, working closely with the EIC to set agendas, communicate to participants, and develop a governance and communications framework that is effective and sustainable. The MD also oversees the organization of the HDSR’s events, such as an annual workshop, including collaborations with communications consultants on promoting events.
The MD works closely with ED to manage the HDSR’s budget and supports EIC with fundraising activities. The MD should be comfortable speaking in public and will be an ambassador for HDSR and its activities. Working with EIC and ED, the MD develops a substantiable business model, including proposals for extramural funding support.
