  • Minimum 6+ years’ experience in professional marketing management including direct-response programs using mail, email, telephone and social media. Experience working in a development shop, preferably within higher education, is required.

  • Must have excellent computer skills. Knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Project, PowerPoint, Excel, and HTML highly desired. Willingness and ability to learn these programs required.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to manage project teams required, including developing and implementing segment specific marketing plans, project schedules and budgets for existing and new programs.

  • Successful track record translating business needs into content driven solutions.

  • Knowledge of utilizing direct mail best practices, Web and interactive media for marketing communications purposes highly desired.

  • Knowledge of marketing research and analytics highly desired.

  • Knowledge of Harvard’s history and organization preferred. Knowledge of fundraising goals and techniques preferred.

  • Must complete a three month University probationary period. Must maintain an excellent attendance record.

This full-time exempt position on the Harvard College Fund’s Reunion and Annual Campaigns team reports to the Managing Director of Direct Marketing and Participation and is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the direct mail program. This includes identifying compelling messaging, defining effective segmentation and pool management, and aligning direct marketing plans to help achieve the goals of the Harvard College Fund.

The Associate Director of Director Marketing and Participation is a member of the team responsible for driving and executing calling, mail, email, and social media channels that annually bring in as much as 70% of HCF gifts. This position requires a strong command of direct mail fundraising principles and practices, a high level of organization, professionalism, and a mastery of annual fundraising paradigms.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assists the Managing Director of Direct Marketing and Participation with overseeing the strategic direction of direct marketing channels (phone, mail, email, and social) and, in her/his absence, assumes leadership of the direct marketing & participation team. Ensures appropriate fundraising plans are in place and monitors ongoing activity of all channels to ensure coordination for increased effectiveness.

  2. Establishes the direct mail appeal strategy. Uses analytics to inform ask amounts, segmentation, messaging, authorship, and timing. Devises and assesses several tests each year to gather data to inform future directions. Tracks and assesses results, trends and develops corresponding plans for optimal results.

  3. Serves as project manager for all mail appeals for the Harvard College Fund, Parents Engagement Programs and Graduate School Fund.

  4. Plays vital role in influencing and managing alumni participation rates in the Harvard College Fund. Coordinates closely with HCF staff to inform strategy related to participation-level activity.

  5. Shares, with the Coordinator of Direct Marketing and Participation, the “on call” responsibilities by phone and email during evening and Sunday calling shifts, to address extraordinary call center issues.

  6. Works with external partners and internal constituents to evaluate and capitalize upon areas of potential growth in dollars and donors.

  7. Cultivates favorable relationships and works closely with colleagues across departments, including, but not limited to, Faculty of Arts & Sciences (FAS), Operations and Business Intelligence, Harvard Public Affairs and Communications (HPAC), and the Harvard Alumni Association (HAA). Regularly communicates direct marketing plans and shares samples of pieces with the fundraising team as they are sent.

  8. In concert with FAS needs, works periodically on special projects in collaboration with the Senior Management Group and/or the FAS fundraising staff for the betterment of the overall fundraising goals and objectives.
