  • Minimum basic qualifications include an advanced degree in Library Science, Archival Studies, and/or English, History, Art History, Theatre, or other subject areas relevant to the collections of Houghton Library.

  • Up to three years, or equivalent, of work experience in a library, archive, museum, or in publishing.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and to collaborate and work effectively with a broad set of colleagues and library users. Proficiency in a language beyond English.

  • Interest in and/or experience with working with archives, manuscripts, rare books, and other rare and unique library holdings. Interest in and/or experience with digital humanities and digital scholarship.

  • Understanding of and appreciation for the ways new technologies are transforming libraries and archives, and willingness to pursue innovative approaches to challenges and opportunities.

  • Knowledge of and experience in providing reference and instruction in rare books, manuscripts and archives. Proofreading skills and familiarity with the editing and production of publications. Experience with web design and online platforms for scholarly communication.

  • Graphic design skills, and/or experience with or willingness to learn Photoshop or other imaging and photo editing software. Experience with project management software.

  • This position requires some evening and weekend hours.

OVERVIEW OF ADMINISTRATIVE FELLOWS PROGRAM

SUMMARY

Houghton Library is pleased to offer a two-year Harvard Library Diversity Fellowship to immerse a rising leader in the library and archives profession in a wide variety of activities related to the management of a world class repository of rare books, manuscripts, archives, and other rare and unique library materials. Over the course of the two years, the Fellow will be exposed to and make contributions to the major functions of the library including scholarly communication, public programs, researcher services, and other areas as opportunities present themselves. The Fellow will also have the opportunity to meet and work with curators, librarians and archivists in other libraries that comprise the Arts and Special Collections of the Harvard College.

A signature project will be core to the Fellow’s experience. The incumbent will primarily work with the editorial team for the Harvard Library Bulletin (HLB), a peer-reviewed scholarly journal published by Houghton Library on behalf of Harvard Library. This position will allow the Fellow to develop expertise in scholarly communication, an area of rising emphasis in librarianship which is predicted to grow as an increasing number of university libraries assume responsibility for scholarly publishing and university presses.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Scholarly Communication

  • Join the editorial team of the Harvard Library Bulletin. Collaborates with colleagues to relaunch the HLB as an online, open access journal, forming and stewardship of a new advisory board, working with colleagues in the Arts and Special Collections of Harvard College Library to expand the scope of the HLB’s content and increase its contributor-base, and in managing submissions, the peer-review process, and image copyrights and permissions.

  • Edit other print and multimedia publications as required, and help maintain Houghton’s social media calendar, generating compelling and coherent content across the library’s different social channels.

  • Coordinates with librarians, editors and other scholarly communication professionals at the library and across campus.

Scholarly & Public Programs

  • Contribute to planning and execution of programs, such as lectures, symposia, conferences, tours and outreach events.

Public Services

  • Help facilitate researcher access to collections in the Reading Room, monitoring their use, and providing reference and instruction.

  • Partner with instructors to contribute to Houghton’s object-based teaching program, as expertise and time allow.

  • Engages with the profession through local and national conferences and events.
