Director, IT Business Partnering, Small Molecule Drug Discovery is accountable for the effective delivery of IT capabilities and services broadly supporting the Small Molecule Drug Discovery organization. This accountability is driven via two distinct but related responsibilities; first, by acting as the direct manager of a team of Business Analysts who flexibly resource key IT initiatives in conjunction with IT Business Partners aligned directly to business functions; and secondly via ownership of key strategic themes and initiatives within Small Molecule Drug Discovery that cross functional boundaries. This is a senior role partnering with the Small Molecule Drug Discovery leadership team to define and drive digital capabilities to meet specific strategic needs.

Responsibilities

Director, IT Business Partnering, Small Molecule Drug Discovery is accountable for the effective delivery of IT capabilities and services broadly supporting the Small Molecule Drug Discovery organization. This accountability is driven via two distinct but related responsibilities; first, by acting as the direct manager of a team of Business Analysts who flexibly resource key IT initiatives in conjunction with IT Business Partners aligned directly to business functions; and secondly via ownership of key strategic themes and initiatives within Small Molecule Drug Discovery that cross functional boundaries. This is a senior role partnering with the Small Molecule Drug Discovery leadership team to define and drive digital capabilities to meet specific strategic needs.

Provides strong and supportive management for a team of scientifically-minded IT Business Analysts

  • Establishes and maintains a learning culture while demonstrating a passion for skillset development within Business Relationship Management, Business Analysis, and the Small Molecule Drug Discovery scientific domain.

  • Partners with IT Business Partner peers within IT for Small Molecule Drug Discovery to effectively and flexibly resource the broad portfolio of Small Molecule Drug Discovery digital capability investments.

  • Develops and coaches team members to achieve and exceed short-term objectives, to support their long-term career development, and to sustain an internal pipeline of talent for the future. Leverages the BMS Values to build a compelling team culture.

Provides domain leadership

  • Owns the IT strategy: Drives the development of realistic and actionable multi-year strategic digital capability roadmaps, informed and prioritized by both business and IT in an enterprise context. Prioritizes digital capability investments appropriately and is jointly accountable for budget management.

  • Develops compelling business cases: Leads the prioritization and development of strong and clear business cases for digital capability investments in support of the roadmap and aligned with the platform strategy. Defines, measures, & achieves business outcomes for highest value digital capabilities.

  • Brings an external view: Actively maintains awareness of external drivers in the business domain and relevant technology trends, and brings new ideas.

  • Knows what value looks like: Understands where BMS should be competitively differentiated through technology, translates business needs into specific business requirements, sees realistic opportunities for IT to add more value, and balances this with a pragmatic understanding of “fitness for purpose”.

Leverages the matrix to drive portfolio execution

  • Demonstrates Matrix leadership by ensuring that all IT functions are successful in their delivery of services to Small Molecule Drug Discovery.

  • Empowers delivery teams: Understands IT business partner accountabilities throughout the portfolio lifecycle, and builds empowered and trusting partnerships with IT delivery team members at all levels.

  • Constructively advocates for value: Ensures delivery teams understand how to make the right trade-offs between speed, quality and cost. Connects the business stakeholders with the broader IT services. Ensures value is being captured from the entire lifecycle of the investment (from launch through retirement).

  • Shows good judgement in communication: Communicates successes and issues accurately, urgently, and to the right audience, and takes accountability for ensuring effective management of expectations with business leaders.

  • Boldly acts with urgency: Shows courage, tenacity and respect to provoke uncomfortable conversations in order to remove roadblocks to value delivery.

Desired Experience

  • B.S., M.S., or Ph.D in a relevant scientific or technical domain

  • Seasoned direct and matrix management skills, with a particular emphasis on energizing and developing talent.

  • Relevant experience with resourcing a complex digital capability portfolio.

  • Relevant expertise in the application of IT capabilities to drive business value in a Research & Early Development domain.

  • Track record of leading the analysis of complex and ambiguous business needs, and integrating those needs into compelling and actionable strategic plans and investment business cases with broad reach and impact.

  • Track record of delivering high-value digital capability projects within timelines and budget.

  • Demonstrated commitment to creative thinking and application of innovative technologies within a relevant scientific domain.

  • Proven ability to drive efficiencies and strategic synergies across IT functions and platforms.

  • Strong collaboration, communication and presentation skills.

  • Working knowledge of agile methodologies applied to SDLC and IT services
