Sanofi Group Head of Immunology and Inflammation Business Development in Cambridge, Massachusetts

The Global Business Development (BD) department is part of the Sanofi Partnering, a Global Enabling Function within the Sanofi Group. The mission of BD is to seek transformational ideas and execute external growth initiatives to address Sanofi Group´s strategic priorities. This mission is fully supporting Sanofi´s strategic roadmap, specially aligned with the following strategic priority: Reshape the portfolio and sustain innovation in R&D to serve patients worldwide.

The key activities of BD are the search, evaluation, structuring, negotiation and closing of strategic alliances with external companies, involving products and other enabling technologies.

The Immunology and Inflammation (I&I) BD Team within Global BD department is responsible for leading and executing value creating transactions for R&D and commercial opportunities, in alignment with the Sanofi strategic priorities.

Job Purpose

As a member of the BD Leadership Team and reporting to the Global Head of BD, the individual will oversee a broad range of business development activities including opportunity sourcing and review, due diligence, business case development, strategic and valuation analyses, transactional activities, and executing deals

Principal Job Duties:

  • Support the Immunology and Inflammation BD function to prioritize and close key deals of strategic and / or financial significance for Sanofi

  • Lead and direct deal structuring, term sheet and contract development, terms and deal negotiation, and deal execution

  • Lead and direct teams in business case development, financial modeling, and accounting and valuation analyses incorporating probability, time, cost, budget impacts, and returns to allow for optimal strategic and investment decision making

  • Contribute to team and TA efforts to screen, evaluate, and prioritize external opportunities for collaborations, partnerships, in-licensing, etc.

  • Lead executed deal handover, including post-mortem analysis and formal meeting, to transition each deal to business owners, sponsor and alliance management as needed

  • Establish relationships and trust while collaborating across all levels of the organization Present opportunities and make recommendations to executive management

  • Develop and maintain relationships with a wide array of industry participants including management teams of biotech companies, venture capitalists, academic institutions, and investigators, and investment bankers

  • Represent company at industry, investor, and partnering conferences

Basic Qualifications:

  • BA/BS required; MBA, MD or biomedical PhD is strongly preferred

  • Demonstrated track record of successfully in negotiating and executing partnership/licensing/acquisition deals in pharma and/or biotech

  • 15+ years of relevant business experience directly related to biotech/pharma industries with an emphasis on Immunology and Inflammation therapeutic area

  • Evidence of organizational and project management skills; ability to handle multiple competing priorities under demanding timelines

  • Deep commitment and high performance demonstrated in all aspects of work

  • Fluency in English, orally and in writing

  • Valid passport and ability to travel domestically and internationally 20-30%

Core Competencies

The ideal candidate has deep experience and knowledge of the global biopharmaceutical industry including key aspects of drug discovery, development and commercialization.

  • Negotiation skills across all levels of the organization and with external parties

  • Experience implementing partnerships within a biotech/pharma organization

  • Experience as a creative thought leader in deal structuring and execution

  • Excellent problem-solving, conflict-resolution and decision-making skills. Result and quality oriented: able to analyze inputs from all involved departments, to identify the impact, draw conclusions, to set direction and define appropriate actions

  • Familiarity with the Immunology and Inflammation therapeutic area

  • Performance- and achievement–oriented with excellent project management skills; able to work to agreed timelines and a focus on execution and implementation

  • Finance and accounting skills; strong understating of deal accounting and deal structuring; experience working with external auditors

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a complex matrix and cross-cultural environment

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong presentation skills

  • Proven track record of originating and completing new strategic initiatives

  • Excellent networking ability in cross-cultural environment inside and outside Sanofi

  • Multi-country or multi-functional experience

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop high performing teams

  • Experience in biotech/pharma strategy consulting, investment banking, or marketing

  • Ability to represent the company with external parties and to act as an ambassador for Sanofi

The position is based in the Cambridge, MA with availability to travel as required for interaction with external groups and companies, internal teams and stakeholders.
