Based in Cambridge, MA [or in Paris, France] this is a senior level position, reporting to SVP, Global Head of Partnering and Business Development. S/he will be responsible for providing strategic leadership and tactical guidance to a team that manages a portfolio of licenses, collaborations, and partnerships, which have direct and critical impact on Sanofi’s current, near-term, and long-term growth. This is high-impact and high-visibility position.

Main Responsibilities:
Enhance the profile of Alliance Management with internal and external stakeholders by working with the business to anticipate, mitigate, and resolve issues
Maximize value of alliances by regularly assessing the performance and strategic alignment of collaborations and advising decision makers whether to continue, adjust, or exit such alliances
Drive a culture of intellectual curiosity, proactiveness, and ownership of solutions and outcomes
Strategic Impact
Form and maintain trusted relationships with Sanofi senior R&D and commercial leaders
Advise and offer proactive solutions to senior leaders on issues that may arise in collaborations
Develop rapport with and serve as a liaison between counterparties and Sanofi leadership
Provide alliance perspectives and inputs to cross functional deal teams on active deals
Work closely with R&D to shape strategic direction, source, and execute Public Private Partnerships
Represent Alliance Management in various leadership committees or groups within Sanofi
Alliance Management
Work closely with R&D and GBUs to ensure effective and productive relationships with existing pharmaceutical, biotech, and academic partners
Proactively manage a broad and diverse portfolio of licenses, collaborations, and partnerships spanning all stages of development from pre-clinical to mature commercial
Strive to identify potential issues early and work with the business to mitigate them
Proactively outline potential solutions to challenges that arise within alliances
Monitor alliances to determine likelihood to reaching value inflection points and offer advice whether to continue moving forward with or consider terminating for non-performance or lack of or decreased strategic fit
Ensure that all core activities of the alliance management function are actively attended to, including
Alliance Governance, including internal preparations, alignment, and decision making
Management of disagreements and disputes to minimize conflict and maximize value for each partner in the collaboration
Assess health of the collaboration and recommend appropriate adjustments to any aspects of the collaboration, including governance, responsibilities, economics, etc.
Understand the collaboration contract in detail and ensure contract compliance jointly with the cross functional team from R&D, GBUs, legal, finance, manufacturing, etc.
Manage or assist in execution of contract amendments, terminations, or other transactions with the alliance partner
Collaborate with cross functional teams to ensure seamless integration of new alliances into the portfolio and within R&D and GBU structures
When needed, directly manage complex or high-impact and high-visibility alliances or specific issues arising in an alliance
Team Management and Talent Development
Manage and mentor a team of about 40 alliance management professionals, providing strategic and tactical guidance on managing specific collaborations
Grow and develop talent by actively identifying stretch assignments, providing timely and actionable feedback, and maintaining high standards of conduct
Work to develop a culture of curiosity and openness to new ideas with a drive to proactively identify and discuss issues with the business
Instill in the Alliance Management team a strategic and proactive mind set focused on understanding value of alliances to Sanofi, active management of alliances, and clear and crisp communication
About You
A leader with global experience, intellectual curiosity, and proven and identifiable track record of impactful alliance management, collaborative leadership, and talent development.
15 years + experience in pharma or biotech
At least 5 years in an alliance management role,; ideally with direct experience across the spectrum of research, development and commercial stage alliances
At least 5 years of team management experience of managing at least 5+ individuals
Advanced scientific or business degree (PhD, MD, MBA), with some scientific background preferred
Excellent written and oral communication skills with track record of presentations at the C-suite level
Strong leadership and influencing skills demonstrated through driving new strategic initiatives or management of complex personnel or alliance matters
Experience with exploring, developing, and executing new strategic directions for an enterprise
Demonstrated track record of solving disputes and disagreements in alliances
Experience leading multi-national and multi-cultural teams
Deep network within the pharma and biotech industry
Fluency in English
The role may require up to 20-25% travel.
