323625BR Job ID: 323625BR Job Description: This new leadership role is created to deliver on the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research (NIBR) vision of accelerating drug discovery through early access to academic innovation. This role is accountable for defining and operationalizing NIBR’s global strategy for identifying breakthrough external scientific advances, connecting external scientific expertise and ideas to advance our Disease Area and Functional Area strategies, and structuring partnerships that maximize the value of NIBR pipeline. By sourcing breakthrough transformative early innovation across the world, this role has a direct impact on the Novartis research and early development pipeline. At the intersection between the global NIBR research and development organization and the external research environment, the leader in this role is accountable for establishing and maintaining NIBR’s reputation in biomedical innovation ecosystems across the world as well as working cross-functionally with internal leaders to deliver new value creating opportunities. The leader will also play a critical role in advancing an “originator-agnostic” approach and culture in discovery science across NIBR’s global DAs / FAs. Job Responsibilities Key responsibilities: •Define and operationalize NIBR’s early partnership strategy, ensure buy-in from all levels of NIBR leadership, and disseminiate across internal and external stakeholders. •Engage in proactive dialogue with internal scientific and business stakeholders at all levels of the organization and all divisions of Novartis to build sourcing strategies, identify scientific priorities, and design / advance activities to access and assess academic innovation •Partner with BD&L, Finance and Scientific Leadership to define and execute new collaboration / deal frameworks that create and maximize value for all key stakeholders (i.e. NIBR / Novartis, external investigators, external institutions). •Partner with Scientific Leadership to design and roll-out new strategic frameworks for systematic innovation of new therapeutic concepts that integrate combinations of internal and external science to arrive at novel opportunities to advance our pipeline •Build an “originator-agnostic” culture across NIBR, creating a mindset of looking externally as well as internally to identify highest value scientific opportunities to advance our pipeline •Elevate NIBR to partner of choice for advancing biomedical research and translational science for potential research collaborations and/or in licensing opportunities by building a comprehensive outreach strategy that includes networking with academic investigators, global roadshows, conference / panel presence, scientific advisory boards and superior relationship cultivation and management •Build, coach, and lead a fit-for-purpose, high performing global Early Strategic Partnerships team and raise the bar to effectively implement and execute on external innovation strategies; •Establish strategic academic search and evaluation capabilities that address the scientific priorities and needs of DAs/FAs/Institutes; Access, identify and evaluate incoming early stage opportunities with our team of scientists for scientific and business fit; Partner with ExRC and Legal to ensure successful negotiation of standard and high-priority complex academic deals. •Drive the execution of NIBR’s academic research collaborations based on NIBR’s scientific mission and portfolio strategy. •Create, drive and execute new strategic initiatives and/or oversee existing programs and projects that support NIBR’s vision and short- and long-term plans to bring in the highest value science into our pipeline from the academic eco-system and other early stage innovators in major markets such as North America, Europe, Australia, Asia. •Engage in significant cross-departmental / cross-divisional influencing and collaboration with BD&L, General Legal, Patents, Finance, Strategy, Portfolio Management, NIBR Learning, Procurement within Novartis Business Services, Communications, Diversity and Inclusion (D&I), DAs/FAs and Institutes to ensure alignment on NIBR’s external presence. \n\n\n\n Position Title: Global Head, Early Strategic Partnerships-NIBR Minimum requirements: •Advanced scientific degree (PhD or MD preferred) •10+ years’ experience in an academic and/or biopharmaceutical industry, including experience in search and evaluation of external innovation opportunities and/or strategy •Extensive experience with drug discovery and pharmaceutical R&D •Excellent communication (oral & written) and effective public speaking skills •Demonstrated ability to challenge the status quo, take smart risks, and learn from failure •Strong analytical skills with proven ability to apply “out-of-the-box” thinking to design scientific and organizational strategies and solve problems •Familiarity with and/or strong interest in different innovation theories and approaches •Excellent project management and organizational skills and proven ability to foster teamwork in a fast paced, large, multi-level, and multi-cultural organization •Excellent interpersonal skills and proven ability to lead through collaboration, influence, operating in a matrix, and organizing people around a common cause •Unwavering passion for equity in science education and training, the importance of mentorship, and creating an inclusive environment You’ll receive: Competitive salary, annual bonus, long term incentive for select levels, health insurance, paid vacation/holidays, potential flexible working arrangements, subsidized dining facilities, employee recognition scheme.
