  • Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, or other creative field required.

  • Minimum 10+ years’ related experience. Experience working with frontline fundraisers, project teams, and designers required. Experience overseeing and developing communications plans and integrated messaging strategies.

  • Management experience required.

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • Experience in an agency or internal marketing team is highly desirable.

  • Demonstrated ability to project manage required, including contributing to the design of and implementing segment specific marketing plans, project schedules and budgets for existing and new programs.

  • Successful track record translating business needs into content driven solutions.

  • Must have excellent computer skills, with MAC proficiency preferred. Knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Project, PowerPoint, Excel, and HTML highly desired. Willingness and ability to learn these programs required.

  • Strong digital literacy is required.

  • Knowledge of utilizing the Web and interactive media for marketing communications purposes highly desired.

  • Knowledge of marketing research and analytics highly desired.

  • Knowledge of Harvard’s history and organization preferred.

  • Knowledge of fundraising goals and techniques preferred, willingness to learn required.

Additional Information:This position requires a 6 month orientation and review period.

  • Develops communications and marketing strategies and plans to support FAS fundraising objectives. This includes setting an overarching strategic direction for fundraising marketing and communications, as well as defining audiences, overseeing message development, and working closely with senior communications colleagues across AA&D and FAS to reinforce and coordinate messaging efforts.

  • Leads the assessment of FAS Development-wide marketing and communications needs across audiences and channels. In collaboration with fundraising managers, sets priorities within fundraising communications needs.

  • Oversees and provides strategic direction for all content and communications plans in support of FAS fundraising efforts, to include direct marketing appeals; engagement messaging and social media; fundraising priority whitepapers; gift proposals and gift opportunities collateral; event communications and marketing; acknowledgements; gift announcements; newsletters; internal communications; annual and stewardship reports; volunteer training collateral; and other communications as needed.

  • Advises the Dean of Development and Dean of the FAS on communications strategies and initiatives. Develops and manages a strategic plan for the Deans’ broad-based communication to relevant FAS constituencies, including staff, faculty, and donors.

  • Works closely with departments across the FAS and within the development office to ensure coordination, alignment, and reinforcement across all external messaging to alumni, parents, and prospects. This involves developing close working relationships with public affairs, the College and GSAS communications offices, and the Deans’ offices.

  • Establishes and manages internal mechanisms for content quality management and dissemination, inclusive of facilitating the review and approval hierarchies and protocol.

  • Oversees Direct Response Marketing (DRM) efforts, with the goals of increasing engagement and participation at all levels; using data to inform engagement strategies; and coordinating messaging across our development effort.

  • Maintains relationships with internal peers in various schools, including GSAS and SEAS, as a means to ensure an integrated approach to all communications.

  • Serves as primary FAS Development Communications liaison to Harvard Public Affairs and Communications (HPAC) and the FAS Dean’s Office.

  • In collaboration with HPAC, determines when, how, and with whom to share talking points and resources related to Harvard issues in the news.

  • Uses data to inform strategies, working closely with the communications team to identify consistent segments and analyze complex data to develop and adjust plans.

  • May serve as writer/editor for a wide range of print, electronic, and event communications collateral.

  • Must be conscious of risk management in handling confidential information. Must be collaborative, conscientious, and results-oriented, and handle even difficult situations with a sense of humor. Must have the ability to produce clear documentation.

Alumni Affairs and Development (AA&D) comprises the University Development Office (UDO), Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) Development, AA&D Resources, and the Harvard Alumni Association (HAA). There is a unique relationship between the University and the FAS fundraising operations, resulting from a long history in which University fundraising ultimately grew out of College fundraising.

Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) Development

FAS Development is responsible for the fundraising efforts supporting the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, including Harvard College, the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. FAS Development staff work with Harvard College donors, alumni, parents, and friends who provide critical support for the FAS and often for other parts of the University.

Reporting to the Associate Vice President and Dean of Development for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) within Harvard’s Alumni Affairs and Development (AA&D) office, the Executive Director is responsible for overseeing communications and marketing strategy for FAS development. This includes setting an overarching strategic direction for fundraising marketing and communications, as well as overseeing communications functions inclusive of project management, content development, creative engagement, and direct response marketing.
