Sage Therapeutics Director/Senior Director, Rewards (Compensation) in Cambridge, Massachusetts

General Scope and Summary

SAGE Therapeutics is searching for a creative, resourceful, integrative thinker for an important role developing compensation strategies and programs that excite great talent to join our team, do their best work, and that are aligned with Sage company and People & Experience strategy and high-performance culture. Lead the Compensation discipline to effectively evaluate, design, implement, and communicate compensation and recognition strategy, programs, policies and initiatives that competitively position Sage in the attraction and retention of talent. This includes hands-on development of supporting compensation infrastructure. Will team with, and support, the Benefits and Well-being discipline in the context of overall Reward objectives.

Roles and Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

  • Partner with the V.P. Rewards to create and drive strategy that supports building a workforce of top talent to help Sage achieve its growth plans.

  • Build scalable compensation infrastructure to meet the needs of a high-growth company.

  • Develop and communicate the organization’s total rewards strategy as it relates to base salary, variable pay plans, equity programs, and recognition consistent with the company’s Total Rewards Philosophy.

  • Ownership of the design and communication of compensation and recognition programs to effectively attract, retain and engage key talent, and enabling the organization to meet key priorities and the needs of the business. May provide support for employee Benefit initiatives and programs.

  • Conduct competitive research, market analysis, pay equity analysis, market pricing, and modeling for compensation programs, and provides competitive assessments of trends and impacts.

  • Develop compensation guidelines and practices that drive a performance-oriented culture and ensure consistency and competitiveness.

  • Ensure adequate estimates, forecasts, and calculation of expenditures/value in compensation, programs for budget planning and to enable effective decision making.

  • Provide oversight of commercial sales incentive and other field-based compensation programs to ensure appropriateness and alignment with broader company compensation philosophy.

  • Provide support to the V.P. Rewards working with external executive compensation consultants on the design, development, and recommendations for the Compensation Committee.

  • Work with the People Operations team to build compensation infrastructure and enhance compensation planning/decision making capabilities leveraging our Workday people system globally.

  • Ensure data integrity, analytics and reporting to drive data based organizational and people related decisions.

  • Ensure compliance with all governmental regulations related to compensation.

  • Work with HR Business Partners, Talent Acquisition Team and business leaders on various projects and activities to ensure the Company attracts and retains the right talent and meets business needs and providing support as a subject matter expert.

Experience, Education and Specialized Knowledge and Skills

Must thrive working in a fast-paced, innovative environment while remaining flexible, proactive, resourceful, and efficient. Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to collaborate, and develop relevant and realistic plans, programs, and recommendations. Demonstrated ability to translate strategy into action. Proven track record in leading a compensation discipline.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • 10+ years of increasingly responsible experience within the compensation function, including minimum of 3 years of compensation program management experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Compensation Professional Certificate (CCP). Master’s degree is a plus.

  • Experience of navigating and building through high growth. Industry experience within pre-commercial and commercial bio/pharma or other life sciences is a plus.

  • Knowledge and experience developing and managing multi-faceted compensation plans for a broad range of employee populations including base pay, bonus, sales incentive, equity, and recognition programs.

  • Knowledge and experience with executive compensation design and administration. Experience supporting Compensation Committee’s is a plus.

  • Experience managing compensation internationally, European experience preferred.

  • Knowledge of HR systems – prior Workday experience is a plus.

  • Proven ability to gauge effectiveness of the organization's compensation programs and translate data into solutions to continually improve programs and practices.

  • Experience working with all levels of management and consulting with key business stakeholders. An ability to influence for greater outcomes.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to effectively work across levels, and functions.

  • Strong team player that has a customer service approach and is solution oriented.

  • Attention to detail and the ability to work individually, within a multi-disciplinary team, as well as with external partners and vendors.
