  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and critically.

  • Demonstrated experience with and enthusiasm for engaging with students.

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and belonging.

  • Familiarity with the IOP, Harvard Kennedy School, and Harvard University is preferred.

  • Some fundraising experience helpful, but not required.

This is a hybrid position based on our campus in Cambridge, MA. Department:Institute of PoliticsPre-Employment Screening:Education, IdentityJob Function:General Administration Position Description: The Director is charged with energetically setting the strategy and priorities of the IOP in order to push the institution to new heights. The Director should serve as an inspirational leader but also a nimble manager to a roughly 15-person team, with a focus on developing innovative and policy-relevant programs that will encourage the next generation of public leaders and build on the IOP’s national platform for discourse on policy and politics. The Director reports to the Dean of the Kennedy School and collaborates closely with the IOP’s Senior Advisory Committee (which comprises well-known public leaders). The Director oversees the Student Advisory Committee (which comprises undergraduate Harvard students who are especially committed to the IOP’s mission). The Director is supported by an Executive Director.

The Director also works collaboratively with a wide range of other constituent groups. The Director works closely with Harvard undergraduates who are interested in politics and public service, showing skill and enthusiasm in supporting their aspirations and activities. The Director works constructively on matters of common interest with students, staff, faculty, and visitors of the broader Kennedy School community and of Harvard University as a whole. The Director represents the IOP in public, including speaking in engaging ways at Forum events and IOP conferences.

The Director is a person of stature who maintains a strong presence on the Harvard campus and attracts leaders from across the political spectrum, the country and around the world. The Director must be a dynamic leader and innovator who will encourage critical thinking by supporting a diversity of ideology. Some of the most significant political figures over the last 50 years—Presidents, would-be presidents, Governors, Senators, other policymakers—have either been Fellows at the IOP or participated at events in which they imparted their practical insights about navigating the world of politics and public service. The first of its kind, the Harvard IOP has become an international model which has been replicated at many other academic institutions

The activities of the IOP are extensive. For 50 years, the IOP has welcomed Fellows who participate in semester-long resident programs. These individuals have served at all levels of government and civil society and represent the full political spectrum; campaign managers and consultants, representatives from advocacy organizations, and journalists have served as Fellows. The Fellows run student study groups and participate in other student programs. The IOP also runs an extensive public service internship program; conducts educational seminars for elected officials; organizes conferences that bring together academic, political, and government leaders; and hosts world leaders and other high-level speakers at events in the John F. Kennedy, Jr., Forum at the Kennedy School.
