Sanofi Group Director of External Innovation, Biologics in Cambridge, Massachusetts

This Director-level position for External Innovation for Biologics reflects Sanofi’s strategic interest in this exciting field that has significantly transformed the therapeutic landscape in the past two decades. The position is intended to be a key enabler and accelerator of Sanofi’s corporate objective of being a leader in the field of Biologics-based therapies. Through internal protein engineering capabilities, partnerships (e.g. Regeneron Pharmaceuticals) and targeted acquisitions (Ablynx, Bioverativ, Synthorx, Kymab) Sanofi has established significant capabilities for large molecules research, development, and manufacturing.

The incumbent will be expected to contribute to both the strategy and the execution for Biologics technologies and therapeutic applications. Below is a list of key responsibilities:

  • Internally, work closely with the Large Molecules Research (LMR) center of excellence, therapeutic area representatives, Biologics CMC and Industrial Affairs and other platforms to appreciate, understand, prioritize, and map gaps and needs, as it relates to external related innovation objectives. When appropriate, work closely with External Innovation leads for specific therapeutic areas, on specific therapeutics that are part of the innovative platform.

  • Externally, develop and leverage the ecosystem of academics, VCs, biotechs and others to propose innovative technology approaches to the platforms, aligned with their priorities. The incumbent will develop strong relationships with external stakeholders to access and progress gap-filling opportunities.

  • Recognize opportunities with ‘cross-over’ potential to other areas such as gene delivery, capsid engineering, drug delivery, cell and gene therapy and work with the appropriate external innovation and R&D stakeholders to further such opportunities

  • Maintain and drive a portfolio of innovative biologics opportunities. The incumbent will exercise their knowledge of technologies, therapeutic targets and the discovery and development processes to judiciously triage opportunities and prioritize them for presentation to stakeholders and for funding.

  • Work closely with the Transaction group, Legal, Finance, IP etc. to put in place contracts to leverage these opportunities. Where needed, the incumbent will work with the Alliance Management team to ensure proper management of some of these alliances.

  • Provide leadership on specific programs from the start of the evaluation through the governance process and to the start of due diligence. Work closely with the deal and assessment teams to build and maintain aggressive and realistic project management timelines, roles and responsibilities through the end-to-end process.

  • Represent Sanofi at suitable external conferences and events,be a Sanofi ambassador to the external scientific and biotech communities.

  • Reporting structure will be tailored to match the experience and seniority of the incumbent.

This position is scheduled to be based in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Sanofi US is only considering candidates who are currently legally eligible to work in the U.S.

Company-paid relocation benefits are not offered for this position

Qualifications:

A minimum of a PhD in Biological Sciences is required. A minimum 5 years of hands-on work experience in biotech/pharma industry on innovative biologics/large molecule therapeutics is required. Working knowledge of synthetic biology as applied to areas such as cellular engineering, cell-line development for biologics (mAbs, enzymes, viruses) processes development and/or manufacturing is required. Awareness of current and emerging science in areas such as protein engineering as applied to intracellular delivery, conditional activation and is highly desired.

Demonstrated track record of delivering results when working in cross-­‐functional teams with matrix reporting relationships is required.

Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with internal and external senior executives is required.

Demonstrated ability to influence peers and seniors to make difficult choices and trade-offs is required.

Experience in representing company/institution at partnering and technical conferences.

Candidates should possess a strong domestic and international external network in relevant fields, via academia, biotechs and VCs.

Candidates should have experience in the deal execution process, in particular the search and evaluate process.

Excellent, concise written and verbal communication skills are critical.

Post-pandemic, ability to travel domestically and internationally (up to ca. 30%, on average).

Language:

Fluency in written and spoken English. Knowledge of additional languages (French and/or German) a plus
