Sage Therapeutics Director, Medical Affairs Publications in Cambridge, Massachusetts

General Scope and Summary

Sage Therapeutics is searching for a creative, resourceful, fast-acting, integrative thinker for an important role leading medical publications strategy and its execution in alignment with overarching Global Medical Affairs strategy and Corporate goals. The Director of Publications is responsible for cultivating partnerships with cross-functional partners to provide leadership in support of development of SAGE medical publications and for interacting with investigators, KOLs, HCPs, and internal SAGE departments to ensure the medical and scientific merit of SAGE publications.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute an integrated publications plan that supports aligned clinical and medical strategies.

  • Collaborate with the cross-functional teams to translate data evidence into medical communication strategy and finally into medical publication objectives, key messages, and activities.

  • Lead cross-functional publication efforts in alignment with product development teams to ensure prioritized submission and publication of data to address unmet educational needs.

  • Provide oversight of manuscript development for all SAGE products and abstracts, posters, and oral presentations for key meetings.

  • Ensure consistent adherence to publications policies in accordance with good publication practices through oversight and leadership of publications activities.

  • Work closely with Medical Directors, HEOR, and MSLs to oversee development of digital, web-based, and mobile optimized materials to enhance online HCP education; enable peer-to-peer education among MSLs and external HCPs while ensuring scientific accuracy, objectivity, fair-balance, and alignment with internal scientific plans.

  • Develop and lead medical publication team members to ensure consistent cross-functional communication and achievement of corporate, functional, and individual performance goals.

  • Represent SAGE and support presentation of SAGE presentations at scientific and clinical congress meetings.

  • Oversee publication repository system (PubStrat or Datavision) and ensure maintenance and quality of record keeping therein.

  • Oversee Congress coverage for major congresses and coordinate with team to produce post-congress summary reports.

  • Responsible for developing and updating publication SOPs and work instructions.

  • Attend Advisory Boards to obtain guidance on publication-related issues and plans.

Experience, Education and Specialized Knowledge and Skills

Must have excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to develop important relationships with key stakeholders, and the ability to identify issues and raise to key stakeholders in order to develop relevant and realistic plans, programs, and recommendations.

Basic Qualifications

  • PhD, PharmD, or MD degree required.

  • 7+ years of prior industry experience in leading medical communications and publications efforts in a highly matrixed organization, including:

  • Prior experience in helping to develop medical strategic and tactical plans in support of drug launch in orphan or rare-disease, psychiatry, or neurology.

  • Prior management experience of 2 or more direct reports.

  • Veeva platform experience.

  • Pub Strat or similar publication platform system owner/super-user experience.

  • SOP development experience, which includes guiding process development to ensure compliance to industry standards in publications.

  • 30% business travel required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior neurology and/or psychiatry experience is highly preferred.

  • ISMPP Certified Medical Publication Professionalâ„¢ (CMPP) certification is preferred.

  • Must thrive working in a fast-paced, innovative environment while remaining flexible, proactive, resourceful, and efficient.

  • Experience working with all levels of management and consulting with key business stakeholders. An ability to influence for greater outcomes.

  • Possesses strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Attention to detail and the ability to work individually, within a multi-disciplinary team, as well as with external partners and vendors.

  • Highly motivated, decisive, and results-oriented individual with excitement about the vision and mission of Sage.

  • Must be able to actively manage and track many complex projects in parallel, structuring the actions of many people toward shared outcomes.

  • Experience and ability managing multiple vendors and complex projects and budgets.

  • Exceptional knowledge of medical communication approaches and best practices.

  • Familiarity with regulatory and legal guidelines regarding medical communication and publication strategy and execution.

  • Strong team player that has a customer service approach and is solution-oriented.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to develop important relationships with key stakeholders, the ability to identify issues and raise to key stakeholders in order to develop relevant and realistic plans, programs, and recommendations, and a proven ability to influence decision-making without established authority.

  • Leadership skills, including a passion for working within multiple teams and proven ability to achieve results in a matrix organization consistently and systematically bringing meaningful value to healthcare providers.
