Sage Therapeutics Director, Commercial Business Management in Cambridge, Massachusetts

General Scope and Summary

Sage Therapeutics is searching for a collaborative, strategic, and experienced commercial leader who will be responsible for providing strategic thought partnership and business management support to the General Manager, US Commercial and the US Commercial Leadership Team. At times, the position may also lead high profile initiatives as determined by the Chief Commercial Officer at Sage. The successful candidate requires a high level of biopharma commercial business acumen and leadership experience across multiple areas, which may include Market Access, Marketing, Sales, and Commercial Operations. The qualified candidate will have demonstrated results in leading and consulting with cross-functional teams in delivering large scale initiatives and balancing the management, communication, and execution of multiple high priority responsibilities at any given time. This role requires the ability to work daily with senior level commercial leaders on the US Commercial Leadership Team (US-CLT) and cross-functionally with other Commercialization and Program Team leaders to bring order, alignment, and focus to the efforts of the team(s) to ensure key initiatives are planned, integrated, communicated, and executed successfully.

This position will report to and function under the guidance and direction of the General Manager, US Commercial and will sit on the US Commercial Leadership Team. Additionally, the position may at times lead high profile initiatives supporting the Chief Commercial Officer at Sage.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Provide both strategic and project management oversight of high priority initiatives as identified by the GM-US Commercial, and at times the Sage CCO, that require a high level of organization, change management support, strategic thinking, and alignment of cross-functional leaders and teams to achieve the desired outcome.

  • Provide business management support to the zuranolone CHAMP team: Commercial, HEOR, Access, Medical, and Patient/Policy team. With the CHAMP chair/US-GM, be a strategic thought partner to CHAMP members; plan and facilitate CHAMP meetings and maintain management tools to progress key CHAMP strategic and tactical deliverables that have organizational impact. Identify bottlenecks or issues and propose resolutions to enable core work to move forward on time.

  • Develop content for executive level Commercial and CHAMP briefings and presentations, including meetings with the Board of Directors, Sage Leadership Team (LT), and the Sage Chief Commercial Officer.

  • Provide key business management support to the Joint Commercialization Committee (JCC) members and play a key role in progressing Alliance business matters and ways of working.

  • Oversee the organization, facilitation, management, and follow-through of the US Commercial Leadership Team (US-CLT) to help sustain a focus on high priority issues and opportunities in a period of rapid company growth and transformation.

  • Be a strategic thought partner to US-CLT members to advance key initiatives and execution of US-CLT plans and priorities and attainment of goals. Ensure US-CLT members have the information and context needed to make well informed decisions, and that decisions are communicated effectively throughout the organization. Contribute to US-CLT maintaining as a high-performing Commercial team.

  • Oversee the coordination and project management of the annual business and budget planning processes for US Commercial. Play a key integration role for Commercial functions and at times, Commercialization functions.

  • Maintain a view of the performance of the US Commercial business and its people and culture; be proactive, identify opportunities to make the team better, put steps in place to enhance business performance, improve operational efficiency, and address the evolving needs of our people and culture.

Experience, Education and Specialized Knowledge and Skills

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.

  • 8+ years of Commercial pharmaceutical/biotech experience that includes proven results across multiple commercial functions, which could include Sales, Marketing, Commercial Operations, and Market Access.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA preferred.

  • Business consulting experience preferred.

  • Experience leading and facilitating high performing teams with the ability to influence without authority to deliver broad impact.

  • Experience working with all levels of leadership, including C-suite executives and consulting with key business stakeholders. Ability to create strong relationships at the peer and senior leader levels.

  • Demonstrated experience leading high-profile initiatives that require gaining buy-in and alignment among multiple senior level-leaders and teams and holding them accountable to achieving timeline and quality standards in a fast-moving environment.

  • Direct experience with implementing short and long-term strategies and workstreams needed for the success of large-scale initiatives (including working teams through the change management process).

  • Excellent interpersonal and facilitation skills, the ability to develop important relationships with key stakeholders, good conflict management and negotiation skills, and the ability to analyze complex issues to develop relevant and realistic plans, programs, and recommendations.

  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to strategy and translate strategy into action; excellent analytical skills and an ability to communicate complex issues in a simple way and to orchestrate plans to resolve issues and mitigate risks.

  • Exceptional business verbal and written communication skills and developing compelling executive level presentations.

  • Highly motivated, decisive, and results-oriented individual with the flexibility and creativity to excel in a rapidly growing and changing environment.
