DIGITAL HUMANITIES TECHNICAL DIRECTOR, School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (SHASS)-Music and Theater Arts Section, to provide direction, technical expertise, and team leadership to SHASS programs in digital humanities. Responsibilities include developing tools for unlocking faculty research in the humanities at MIT; programming frameworks in Python and JavaScript for immediate use and/or that can be reused in future Digital Humanities projects; managing--aided by postdoctoral associates--the work of undergraduate researchers in building out aspects of faculty research and teaching; staying abreast of and embracing new technology; writing tutorials and other documentation for lab activities; answering questions (including drop-in hours) from students, research assistants, and faculty; setting challenging but manageable expectations for the intersection of computing and the humanities; aiding with gathering information and code output for lab publications; and performing other duties as needed.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: master’s degree in computer science or related field; at least five years’ experience programming across a variety of platforms (time spent in computational graduate education may count towards this qualification) and at least one year in team leadership or formal teaching; extensive knowledge of Python; working knowledge of JavaScript including ES6+; full-stack development experience (OS setup, server configuration, database, web back- and front-end); strong interpersonal and oral and written communication skills; and a desire to work with and teach bright students. Experience with the following preferred: humanities (or digital humanities) demonstrated by a college concentration, minor, major, or independent work; Frameworks and Build Tools in Python, JavaScript, and HTML (Django, Webpack, NodeJS, Bootstrap); optimizing queries in MySQL or PostgreSQL; machine learning or artificial intelligence; and success releasing and maintaining at least one open source project.
