    Job Description

COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER, Brain and Cognitive Sciences (BCS), to develop, write, and edit content to elevate and share the work of BCS faculty, students, postdocs, staff, and researchers. Will be primarily responsible for the maintenance and strategic development of the department’s social media presence; updating/maintaining department website content and working with external developers on periodic upgrades/redesigns; partnering with other staff and administrators on internal/external communications; taking the lead on collaboratively assessing and developing strategic communications and messaging to support the department’s mission and goals; managing freelance writers, graphic designers, and video producers with end products, including research write-ups and profiles, monthly email newsletters to alumni and donors, and a print newsletter three times a year; collaborating on donor-related communications; and media relations.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, or related field or in neuroscience, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, or related field; five years’ experience in college/university communications, preferably in science (especially neuroscience) communications; demonstrated success writing and editing and with project and social media management; and ability to understand scholarly journal articles and interpret highly technical science for an educated lay audience through written and other media. PREFERRED: advanced degree in neuroscience, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, or related field and/or science communications; two years’ experience creating social media content and managing social media presence; advanced-level understanding of building and managing online followings and communities; familiarity with Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and Premiere; basic photography skills; experience and contacts in media relations; and experience with Drupal and WordPress.
