Candidates MUST meet the following basic qualifications in order to be considered for this role:
Bachelor’s degree required
A minimum of five (5) years of marketing, community outreach or related experience - including communications planning, writing, editing, graphical, web, social media content production
Strong knowledge and experience deploying effective digital, social media and online strategies and overseeing website strategy and development.
Computer literacy, including proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat tools, knowledge of web design tools such as Open Scholar, WordPress.
Demonstrated experience writing and editing for print and digital publications.
Additional Qualifications and Skills:
Understanding of integrated marketing communications, strategy development and implementation within an academic setting
Highly adept at translating complex information into relevant and understandable communications for multiple audiences.
Skilled at diplomatically and successfully achieving goals in a complex, matrixed environment.
Ability to manage projects from conception to implementation with proven record of creating project plans with deadlines and aggressive timetables for implementation and review of materials.
Experience working with outside vendors and consultants, including the ability to set project milestones and keep internal and external team members on time and on budget.
Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with proven project management abilities and ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across departments.
Graphic design skills and experience with desktop publishing a plus
A successful candidate must demonstrate self-motivation, professionalism, flexibility, and discretion.
The ability to balance short- and long-term deadlines, accept and process feedback, and work collaboratively with colleagues at all levels are essential skills for this role.

Department:Office of the ProvostPre-Employment Screening:Education, IdentitySchedule:Full Time - 35/hrs./weekJob Function:Communications Job-Specific Responsibilities:Jointly reporting to the Chief of Staff to the Provost and the Director of Media Relations and Communications in Harvard Public Affairs & Communications (HPAC), the Communications Officer will lead the development of a communications and engagement strategy for the Provost, with a focus on project planning, content strategy, and production, including the development of communications plans, content packages/materials, web and social media. The Communications Officer will lead the development and implementation of the Provost’s overarching communication strategy to effectively engage with diverse constituents, and convey planning, goals, progress, and accomplishments to stakeholders and partners both on and off campus. This work will highlight Provostial activities that amplify the ideas and efforts generated by the larger Harvard community of students, faculty, postdocs, and staff.
The position is dedicated to serving the communications needs of the Office of the Provost, a substantial portion of which will be focused on the Office of Vice Provost for International Affairs (OVPIA):
Works with Provost’s Office leadership to align communications strategies, goals, work products and outcomes with priorities
Leads development and maintenance of various communications materials including websites, brochures, newsletters, and any needed templates; creates timetables for implementation and review
Leads and collaborates with Provost’s Office and HPAC staff on communications planning and execution around the release of key Provost’s Office reports and information
Supervises the dissemination of timely information to internal and external audiences on key Provost’s Office-related topics
Implements branding across the Provost’s Office; altering existing materials and developing new materials as needed to achieve organizational goals
Coordinates with HPAC spokespersons on proactive and reactive media relations strategies; works with senior management on message development
Develops and maintains a suite of online and print materials that tell the story of Harvard’s global engagement, such as the Harvard Worldwide website and annual “One Harvard, One World” brochure; developing and maintaining social media accounts with the same objective; managing projects and budgets with outside vendors
Develops consistent branding for the OVPIA and, as capacity allows, for Harvard’s University-wide offices abroad
Develops and maintains an appropriate social media presence to support the work of the OVPIA and to promote knowledge and understanding of Harvard’s global engagement
Conceptualizes and/or manages events to engage and inform the Harvard community and the public about the University’s global engagement and/or the work of the OVPIA, including Worldwide Week at Harvard, Harvard Abroad, and 24 Hours of Harvard; includes building audiences for events, and producing material to promote and to archive OVPIA activity
Manages annual OVPIA communications budget, as set by the Vice Provost and Assistant Provost for International Affairs
Works with HPAC to promote knowledge and understanding of Harvard’s global engagement
Supports the Vice Provost and Assistant Provost for International Affairs in developing and delivering presentations on Harvard’s global work, on the work of the OVPIA, and/or on global trends that are affecting Harvard and higher education; systematizing data collection and maintenance for such presentations
Works with the Vice Provost for Advances in Learning, and the Division of Continuing Education as appropriate and time allows, to integrate communication about Harvard’s global teaching into the broader story of Harvard’s global engagement
