  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products – Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher, Windows Movie Maker; proficiency with Adobe products – Acrobat, InDesign, Photoshop; proficiency; experience using Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and knowledge of other social media platforms; experience with video editing; experience with online content accessibility matters.

  • Ability to carry out website and social media data analytics; experience optimizing website content.

  • Excellent time management and interpersonal skills; ability to prioritize and execute multiple tasks and meet deadlines with minimal supervision; demonstrated initiative and attention to detail; ability to handle complex and confidential information with discretion; ability to work across teams and with a variety of projects and constituencies.

  • Solid writing, editing, and proofreading skills.

  • English Language fluency both verbal and written.

  • Experience with project management and promotion desirable.

  • Experience with survey/data collection tools a plus.

The Communications Manager’s responsibilities include:

  • Writing, soliciting, editing content for the Institute’s website and ensuring that content is both up-to-date and presented in a uniform way.

  • Writing profile features articles about the faculty, students, and visiting scholars/fellows for the website and printed materials.

  • Designing and producing collateral and promotional materials, newsletters, briefing documents, annual reports and other ad hoc reports.

  • Referring media to the appropriate Institute faculty and program experts.

  • Developing press releases and talking points.

  • Producing and scheduling social media campaigns for events, publications, fellowships, etc.

  • Producing short, shareable social media and HURI website video clips from selected Institute events.

  • Developing, creating, and assisting with the production of regular news content about the Temerty Contemporary Ukraine Program, Publications program, Library program, and MAPA Project.

  • Working with MAPA manager to create online MAPA tutorials.

  • Taking publication-quality photographs at HURI events for use on the website and in printed material; organizing and maintaining HURI's digital photographs archive.

  • Working with the HURI team to ensure proper recording of lectures, seminars, symposia, and conferences.

  • Assisting with potential development efforts through writing appeals, stewardship, and acknowledgement letters.

  • Assisting in the preparation of grant proposals.

  • Preparing and copy-editing other written materials as requested.

  • Developing mechanisms to track former students and fellows and to craft communications vehicles to maintain/cultivate continuing relationships with them as members of the HURI community.

Job Summary:

The function of the Communications Manager is to handle communications across the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute and, in consultation with Institute program stakeholders, to develop and manage strategies, including graphic standards branding to ensure consistency in all forms of communications about HURI’s mission and programs. In addition, this individual manages the Institute’s media presence including social media and other online means to ensure visibility of the Institute’s work; promotes Institute programs and special events; regularly informs the public about the Institute’s on-going activities, initiatives, and successes. Acts as HURI's first point of contact and initial spokesperson in relation to Harvard media and external media.

The Communications Manager works in collaboration with the Director, Executive Director, primary program leads, and other HURI administrative staff. The position comes under the direct supervision of the Executive Director.
